One In Between by Roe Horvat

Those Other Stories #2.5

Blurb

It’s been more than a year since Adam first stayed over in Christoffer’s home. Their home. In the safety of Christoffer’s love, Adam has gained strength and confidence. So when Christoffer’s friend Tyler crosses the line, flirting outrageously and forcing his shameless self onto them—even into Adam’s dreams—Adam can easily handle him. To Christoffer’s great amusement, Tyler’s mind gets blown.

One in Between features characters from Those Other Books. It explores the development of Adam and Christoffer’s sexual relationship.

Review

“In Adam’s mind, it was the total submission he craved, the most he could offer, the farthest he could go.”

One In Between is a wonderful, short, intermezzo set after the events in Adam Only but before those in The Other Book. And it’s nothing short of inspired, breath taking, and ridiculously hot.

Few characters I’ve read are as beautiful as Adam during sex. The way he feels, surrenders, gives his all is mesmerizing. In fact, as much as I loved the sex scenes, what I really adored about this story is how it showed how much Adam has grown and the confidence he’s gained now he safely and firmly belongs to and is with Christoffer.

But, I’m inclined to think this scene was also the turning point for Tyler. I like to think that it was seeing Adam and Christoffer together and the total trust between them that started Tyler on the road toward wanting more than hot encounters.

In this book however, you could almost describe Tyler as Adam’s sex toy, under Christoffer’s direction. And, as I may have mentioned before, the encounter is out of this world hot.

“Tyler was invited because Christoffer wanted to fulfil every single one of his beloved boy’s fantasies. Adam was his priority and Tyler was going to respect it.

Before I conclude this review, I want to add that I admire Roe Horvat. He has an amazing ability to bring characters to life with what feels like very few words. His characters grow and fully reveal themselves even when more than half the story is a sex scene. And they have depth, and crawl into your head and heart, making you yearn for more.

Talking about more, I do hope there will be a Liam, Marcus and Luke story.

Long story short: One In Between is proof that a love story can be erotic and that the label ‘erotica’ doesn’t necessarily mean lack of romance. This book is deliciously sexy and thoroughly romantic. True love doesn’t come much more beautiful than this.

The Accidental Baker by Clare London - Book Blitz

- Exclusive to Amazon and Available to Borrow with Kindle Unlimited

Length: 16,000 words approx.

Blurb

Donnie Watson's baking disasters are legendary, but this Easter, his mismatched chocolate eggs bring accidental but astonishing results to four downhearted gay men. The chocolate sweets spill onto the pavement of a small parade of local shops—and go on a matchmaking tour like no other! From a bankrupt and betrayed baker, to a homeless but hopeful man, to a conceited bar owner in need of a reality check, and finally to the hapless but caring Donnie himself.

After all, Love means you can have chocolate too!

Review

This is an absolutely delightful story, utterly feel-good and then some.

The Accidental Baker comes with a wonderful hint of magical realism, all in the form of misshapen but heavenly-tasting chocolate creations.

The chocolate ‘whatever-you-want-to-call-thems’ (because they don’t come close to resembling the bunny and other shapes they were supposed to be) manage to get away from poor hapless Donnie only to end up in locations where they can be found by those who need a little helping hand (or should that be helping chocolate) in the love department.

And that’s all I’m willing to say about the story itself. Read it, enjoy it, and I challenge you to not end the book with a huge grin on your face.

Clare London is in a league of her own when it comes to writing fabulous and fascinating stories which, despite being a short read, manage to give a full story and create the impression that we know the characters a lot better than should be possible given the length of the story.

The Accidental Baker is a highly recommended short read for anyone who needs something to brighten their day and lighten their mood. Because, in my humble opinion, Clare London creates the same sort of magic with her words that Donnie creates with his misshapen chocolates. 😊

Loving a Straight Boy by Joseph Lance Tonlet

Word count: 3k approx.

Blurb

A short-short story that may have you questioning what you would endure for love.

Review

You know an author is beyond talented when he can take over your mind with just 3000 words. Hours after I finished reading this story I’m still playing the ‘what if’ game, wondering what might (or might not) happen next—if anything will ever happen and whether that would be good or bad for either or both of the friends featured.

Unrequited love, or rather unrequited attraction is often beyond heartbreaking. And yet, there is no denying the two ‘boys’ in this story deeply care for each other. All would be just dandy if it wasn’t for the fact that one of them is gay and the other straight. And while the straight guy is perfectly happy to be close and cuddle, his gay life-long friend yearns for more.

And that’s all I’m going to say about this gorgeous, breath-taking and heart-shattering short story, except that I think it poses more questions than it answers. Pondering those questions is both a delight and frustrating. Of course I can come with answers of my own. In fact, I adore books that allow me to work out for myself what might happen next, after the story on the page has ended. But in this case I can’t help wishing that maybe the author will one day feel the urge to let us in on what he imagines might (or might not) happen in the future.

The main puzzle I was left with though was whether or not this story described the ultimate form of tease and denial, and, if so, whether that means the straight guy is knowingly teasing and denying his best friend or the gay man has a masochistic streak so strong he’ll take it even if there’s no such intention from his friend.

Suffice to say that these 3k words will stay with me a lot longer than most full length novels do and that I’ve yet to figure out whether I love or hate the author. Regardless of the answer to that last question, there is no doubt that Loving a Straight Boy once again shows off Joseph Lance Tonlet’s incredible writing talent in all its magnificent glory.

Offering himself for a one-time only weekend of sex and fun to celebrate coming out and his twenty-first birthday seems a great idea to Liam Woodleigh. His best friend, Nic Taylor, is horrified by the idea and insists on being Liam’s bodyguard for the five potential dates Liam chooses.

The day doesn’t go as planned and Liam despairs he’ll get to celebrate his birthday weekend, but Nic is there as protector and to entertain him between dates, insisting that maybe the next man will be the one. Liam follows Nic’s lead as he always has; ever hopeful he will find his weekend lover.

Teaser

One-time only offer!
21st birthday.
Seeks 48 hours of sex and fun.
No strings attached.
Leave a message.

Liam Woodleigh read his ad out loud and looked up from his computer to gauge his friend’s reaction. Nic Taylor stared at him open-mouthed. “What do you think?”

“Seriously? You want me to answer that?” Nic sat cross-legged on Liam’s bed, game controller in hand. For the first time in hours the soldiers stayed motionless on Liam’s large TV which dominated one wall of his bedroom. “I thought you were going to arrange a night out, not end up in some weirdo’s freezer.”

Liam frowned, not happy with Nic’s reaction. “Not if I’m careful.”

“Being careful means not putting yourself in danger in the first place, dumbass.”

“It’s my twenty-first birthday. I’m not going to be twenty-one again. I want to live a little.”

“Then go to a club and pick up a guy. Go to a supermarket and pick up a guy staring at the frozen chips. Do what the rest of us do and go on a dating app.”

“It’s my twenty-first. I want to do something different,” Liam said stubbornly. “Anyway, I might not get any replies.”

Nic threw his hands up in the air in disgust and managed to smack himself in the face with the controller. “Ow! Fuck! You’re an idiot.”

“But you’re going to be my wingman for the day, aren’t you?”

Liam batted his eyelashes at Nic who actually growled at him. It was kind of cute. Nic was cute with dark tousled hair and bright blue eyes. Liam often wondered if anything would happen between them, but they’d been best friends since school and although Nic was openly bisexual he hadn’t shown any sign of being interested in his friend. Liam guessed it was hard to be attracted to the guy whose hair you’d held away from his face while he hurled up too many Porn Star Martinis. He’d had his dreams about Nic in the privacy of his own bed, but he’d never mentioned them out loud.

Nic made another noise of disgust. “I need my head examined. What do you expect me to do?”

Liam beamed at him. “I knew you’d help.”

He wriggled over to sit next to Nic and showed him the screen. “I’ve sent the ad. Now I have to wait for replies. Let’s play.”

It was going to be more than a little embarrassing if no one answered his ad. The only thing he could do was wait and see if anyone wanted to make a shy twenty-one-year-olds’ fantasies come true.

Review

One Time Offer is a most adorable and endearing story. It’s sweet and funny and kept me smiling from start to finish. I had absolutely no doubt where this story line would take me and I enjoyed every single moment and word of the journey.

Liam is cuteness personified. He’s so determined to lose his virginity and stunned when his little add receives numerous replies. His best friend Nick is less surprised about the long list of men volunteering for 48 hours of sex and fun. And he also appears to be acting strangely, but Liam decides to ignore that. I loved how Liam bounced from excitement to insecurity and second thoughts and back again. And Nick was stunning as his wingman, despite the fact that he thought it was all a very bad idea. Everyone should have a friend like Nick. J

Liam’s first three dates are disasters and I found myself laughing out loud while also squirming for poor Liam. His last date on the other hand … perfection.

Liam and Nick had the best-friends-forever vibe going just about perfectly; that wonderful combination of care and banter.

This is a short story and requires a little suspension of disbelief, but in a cute and almost fairytale-like fashion. This is, without a doubt, a comfort read. It is also very well written. I’m very happy there will be a second One Time Offer story coming in the not too distant future. Where do I sign up?

The Contingency Plan by Addison Albright - Release Blitz with Review

Length: 8,040 words approx.

Publisher: JMS Publishing

Blurb

A sheltered prince. A sudden death. An unexpected choice. How will Prince Marcelo react to discovering he’s The Contingency Plan?

For eighteen years, there has been peace between Sheburat and the kingdom of Zioneven. The untimely death of a princess throws the marriage arrangement -- the final phase to complete the terms of the treaty -- into disarray, and the contingency plan is put into motion. Now the Crown Prince of Zioneven gets to make his own choice from among the princess’s younger siblings.

As a rare royal son in the matriarchal sovereignty of Sheburat, Prince Marcelo grew up knowing he would never marry. Never. Royal sons did not marry. Period. Except, Prince Efren isn’t from Sheburat, and he has other plans.

Excerpt

With everyone now in attendance, Queen Giselle stepped forward. “Your Royal Highness, Ladies and Lords, and people of Zioneven, please accept our warm welcome to Sheburat, and I hope you’ll accept our sincere apology for the chaos in which you find us today.”

Prince Efren inclined his head. “Of course, Your Majesty. On behalf of Zioneven, I offer our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved daughter.”

“Thank you,” Queen Giselle replied. “Sadly, our loss yesterday affects more than simply causing us private pain.”

“Indeed.” Prince Efren kept his reply short, perhaps diplomatically leaving it to Queen Giselle to either further the conversation toward whether or not he was ready to choose his alternate, or to wait for a time when her grief would be less immediate.

His mother would put diplomacy first, Marcelo didn’t doubt that. The conversation may or may not happen today, but it would occur during this visit. Diplomacy always came ahead of personal concerns.

“Although disappointment caused by the cancellation of the wedding we’d expected tomorrow is unavoidable,” Queen Giselle said. “I hope you’ll find a small comfort in knowing that you may now make your own choice of your future bride from among my younger daughters rather than the arrangement made on your behalf at the tender age of five.”

Again, Prince Efren inclined his head. “Sibling.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Sibling. The terms of the treaty specify I may choose an alternate from among Princess Marcela’s younger siblings. It didn’t restrict the choice to daughters.”

Marcelo stiffened. What in the world could Prince Efren mean by that? Men didn’t marry men. At least, he’d never heard of such a thing occurring in Sheburat. Marcelo wasn’t alone in his bewilderment. Everyone on his side of the room stilled. None of the faces opposite them exhibited confusion. Was that an acceptable option in Zioneven’s culture?

It was only by mere minutes, but Marcelo did qualify as a younger sibling to Marcela.

For the first time in Marcelo’s recollection, his mother faltered. “Do…surely…but…”

Marcelo turned his head toward her, his wide eyes silently imploring her to voice an objection. Kemble may have recently grown complacent thinking herself in the clear, but she’d at least spent her life knowing she was the likely backup plan.

As a royal son in this matriarchal society, Marcelo had grown up knowing he would never marry. Never. Royal sons did not marry. Period.

He’d been perfectly happy with that knowledge because he’d never experienced the attraction that men outside the royal family felt toward women. In fact, he’d enjoyed knowing he would not have to merge his life with a woman’s with the expectation of having to bed her.

His gaze flicked back and forth between Queen Giselle and Prince Efren before settling on the prince. Prince Efren had kept his eyes locked with the queen’s, but as if sensing Marcelo’s scrutiny, his head turned to reflect Marcelo’s regard.

Marcelo’s heart thudded so vigorously in his chest, surely everyone in the room must hear it. His respiration quickened. That single word uttered by Prince Efren had shattered Marcelo’s understanding of everything he knew about the world and had expected in his life.

Queen Giselle remained frozen for a few more moments, her brows drawn together as she processed the unexpected direction of this discussion. She cast a brief, apologetic glance toward Marcelo, then lifted her shoulders in a barely visible shrug. “The treaty does indeed use that word. Prince Efren, the choice is yours.”

Marcelo’s stomach dropped as her words echoed through the silent hall even though he’d known in his heart that she’d put Sheburat before her son’s individual concerns. So, he felt no personal betrayal. It was who is mother had to be.

Prince Efren continued to stare at Marcelo as he firmly stated, “I choose His Royal Highness, Prince Marcelo. The wedding will proceed tomorrow as planned.”

Marcelo swayed as the blood drained from his face. How could this be? How did such a marriage work? Would he be expected to—

“Marcelo?” Suky’s whispered tone voiced her concern. “Are you unwell?”

She repeated the words, but from farther away. Or did her voice only seem distant? He wobbled as the people around him faded, and then, thankfully, this nightmare all went away.

Review

After insta-lust and insta-love this story can probably best be described as ‘insta-everything’. J

But I’ll start at the beginning. This is a short story that needs to be read with a certain level of suspension of disbelief. But, since this is a fantasy, I found it easy to get caught up in the … well … fantasy. And I have to admit that it makes a nice change to read a story in which two young men see each other for the first time, experience attraction, and are able to act on it despite the fact that their coming together breaks with a long list of conventions and traditions. Sometimes all I want is a little bit of sexy and happy, and this story provided me with both.

I’m rather impressed that the world this story is set in has come to life for me, despite the fact that the short story format didn’t allow for extensive descriptions and explanations. With just a few words the author managed to explain both Marcelo’s matriarchal society and Efren’s more traditional (by our standards) country.

While I wouldn’t have complained if this story had been longer, and would certainly read any further tales about the two princes, I don’t feel this story needed to be longer. By the time it ended I was happy in the knowledge that both MCs were in a good place, together.

Yes, this story is almost closer to a fairy-tale than a fantasy. Yes, all of it is too good and too smooth to be true. But, also yes, this was a delightful little story and a most wonderful and entertaining way so spend part of a rainy afternoon.

A Very Henry Christmas (The Weight of it All 1.5) by N.R. Walker

55 pages
Buy links: Amazon US | Amazon UK
Available on Kindle Unlimited

Blurb

A 12,000 word short story about food, fluff, and fornication.

Henry wants to share his and Reed’s first Christmas Eve being engaged by hosting dinner with their closest friends. Henry loves food and he loves to cook—he plans an entire menu and decorates the house to rival a department store, but even though everything’s perfect, something’s not quite right.

As Henry and Reed prepare for a merry Christmas, no matter what happens, you know it will be a very Henry Christmas.

Review

I read The Weight of it all last February and fell head over heels in love with Henry, Reed and their cast of secondary characters. If you’d like to know exactly how smitten I was you can find a link to my thoughts on and feelings for that book at the bottom of this review. So when I discovered there was a sequel set at Christmas time it took me all of one nano second to decide I couldn’t live without the book. And I was right.

Before I continue with what will be, once again, a gush fest, I need to say that is this very much is a sequel. While you could possibly read and even enjoy A Very Henry Christmas without reading The Weight of it All first, I would strongly advice against such a course of action. Not only will you enjoy this book a lot more if you already know the characters in it, you’d be depriving yourself of the most wonderful and satisfying experience that is reading The Weight of it All.

As you may have guessed from the above, this story is wonderful. It is happy, sexy, laugh-out-loud funny, cute, and totally heartwarming. It may also lead to hunger pangs and a desperate rush to the fridge, although whatever you may find there may well be disappointing after having read about the culinary delights Henry conjures up.

Henry and Reed are as adorable as they were in the first book. Two years have passed since they got together but it hasn’t lessened the love they feel for each other or the physical attraction between them. In fact, their Christmas Eve may be best described as a feast of glorious food, sweet love, hot sex, and a most wonderful surprise. I really hope there will be more books featuring Henry and Reed because comfort reads don’t come more comfortable than this.

Blurb

Daniel Erickson stormed out of his family celebration after choking on turkey served with a side of bigotry. Utterly miserable, he reluctantly lets himself be charmed by the hulk of a man and gets into the stranger’s car ... hoping he won’t be axed before the night is through.

Axel Wilson -- Ax for short, unfortunately -- is a sweetheart. Really. He may be badass-looking but his heart melts into goo at the mere mention of his four-year-old niece. Surely he isn’t dangerous?

Thrown together by family drama, the two men spend the evening getting to know each other. Axel is nothing like Daniel expected. But it doesn’t matter that he loves poetry, is gentle and patient -- and hot! -- Daniel is absolutely not falling in love at first sight. There’s no such thing.

Right?

Excerpt

A few minutes later, a vehicle approached from behind. Reacting instinctively, I turned around and waved my arms, hoping the big truck would stop and have mercy on my freezing ass.

I let out a giddy yelp as it slowed down, but it got stuck in my throat when the driver rolled down the window.

He was huge and couldn't hold his head upright without banging it on the ceiling. Big steel gauges adorned both his ears -- at least an inch and a half wide -- and his hair was black and so closely cropped it resembled a five o'clock shadow more than an actual haircut.

"You need a ride?" he asked and his voice was deeper than the Mariana Trench, perfectly matching his frightening appearance. Black tattoos crept up his neck and snaked down his hands below his sleeves. His shoulders were wide, his muscles strained the sleeves of his thick black jacket, and his cheeks were hollow. I was one second from shitting myself.

"I'm not riding with a serial killer!" The words slipped out of my mouth and I groaned. I couldn't have kept my mouth shut for five fucking seconds to avoid being chopped up and thrown to the wolves?

He threw his head back and let out a thunderous laugh.

"What's so goddamned funny?" I glared at him, but he didn't seem to care.

"I'm no serial killer."

"And I'm just supposed to take your fucking word for it?" I raised an eyebrow. I knew I was being combative and taking out my frustration on this stranger, but I couldn't stop myself.

"You could call my ma for references."

"Ha ha. Very funny." With a deep sigh, I resigned to my fate and started walking again. No way was I getting into a car with that mammoth of a man.

"Where you goin'?" he called after me. When I didn't bother to answer, he eased off the break and let his truck crawl after me.

I swirled around. "Stop following me, you creep," I hissed.

He let go of the steering wheel with one hand and held it up as if he surrendered. "Look, man. It's freezin'. You're wet and miserable. Get in the truck and lemme take you wherever you're goin'." His deep voice was surprisingly gentle. Non-threatening, as if he'd come to expect reactions like mine.

"I'm really not a bad guy." He stuck out his lower lip in a pout that would have made a five-year-old girl green with envy and I had to bite my lip to stop a smile from erupting.

"Really?" I tried to hang on to my mistrust, but he made it hard. His appearance screamed RUN AND HIDE, but there was something soft in his eyes that told a different story.

He shot me a crooked smile. "It was worth a try. It works on my niece every time."

The fucker knew all the right words to say to disarm me. "And how old is she?"

"Four."

I huffed out a reluctant chuckle. "Well, you know how it is. Everyone always says how they couldn't believe their neighbor was a serial killer because he seemed like such a nice guy."

His eyes grew big and round. "You're sayin' you don't trust my niece as a character witness?" He sounded as I'd just delivered the biggest insult of his life, but the amused glint in his eyes told me it was all for show.

"Can you blame me?"

"I guess not." He sighed and grew serious. "Please. I couldn't live with myself if I left you here to freeze to death."

My body screamed at me to take him up on his offer. The ice pellets were relentless and I was soaked and gloomy and was starting to feel like maybe being ax murdered wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to me right now.

The openness in his posture and honesty in his eyes had me on the verge of caving. "You promise you won't kill me?" I sounded like a scared little kid even to my own ears.

Review

First impressions can be so treacherous, not to mention wrong J And boy does Daniel jump to all the wrong conclusions when he first sets eyes on Axel.

Axel looks like danger; huge, covered in black tattoos his appearance seems to scream ‘stay away from me’. And yet, he’s pulled over to help Daniel who is in serious danger of freezing to death unless he finds shelter. And while he might look brutish, he sounds nothing except kind and friendly.

When Daniel accepts Ax’s offer of a lift he doesn’t know that not only are all his preconceptions about to be turned on their head, he’s also taking the first steps towards a future he didn’t expect and couldn’t have seen coming.

My main impression after reading this book can be best described in one word: Cute. Really, characters and stories don’t come much cuter than Axel and the Unexpected Christmas he creates for Daniel.

I really don’t want to say a whole lot more about this story. It’s sweet. It’s cute. It doesn’t shirk away from issues but doesn’t allow them to ruin the overall festive mood of the book. If you’re in the mood for a feel good story that will leave you smiling and sighing, you probably want to read Unexpected Christmas.
