Blurb

A musician, a computer designer, and a tavern owner walk into a bar: it’ll take three shots to get this right …

When Reeve Jenkins picks up his guitar to sing at a local dive bar, the last thing he expects is to bring a guy home that night. Grant McGuire is a man drowning his sorrows in beer after a painful breakup. Having some fun in bed is easy for the two of them but while hookups are simple, pursing a relationship never feels quite right.

Rachael Bradford has seen plenty of attractive men walk into the Hawk Point Tavern but she’s too busy running the place to worry about taking any of them home.

The chemistry between them is off the characters but when Reeve and Grant offer her more than a quick fantasy, they’ll have to figure out how to navigate an openly poly relationship in the small town of Pendleton Bay.

Originally released in 2017, Three Shots has been re-written with an additional 40k words of content, set in the Pendleton Bay Universe, and re-edited.

Review

This was a re-read for me. I first read Three Shots in 2017. Then again, I’m not sure re-read is the right word here. While there certainly are strong similarities between the original Three Shots and this new version, so much has been added and changed that it was almost like reading a brand-new story for the first time. And while there was nothing wrong with this book when it first came out (after all, I give it five stars then too) there is no denying that the extended version is even better.

My original review mentions that the story managed to be deliciously enticing and incredible adorable at the same time, and that is something that hasn’t changed. The sexual encounters, initially between Reeve and Grant and later with Rachael too are hot, exciting, and imaginative. But, while I sure appreciated those scenes, they weren’t what I loved most in this story. What really stood out for me was the communication between these three protagonists. From the moment they meet they are open and frank with each other. There are no ‘misunderstandings’ based on withheld information in this story. Reeve, Grant, and Rachael know at all times what they can expect from the others and what is expected from them. Given that ‘conflict that could have been avoided if only the characters talked to each other’ is one of my pet hates in romance, you can imagine how delighted this set-up made me.

Not that Brigham Vaughn avoids complications, far from it. But the obstacles Rachael, Reeve, and Grant encounter are talked about and dealt with. The only real issues they face are caused by outside forces, more specifically by those who don’t understand and therefore don’t approve of a poly-relationship.

This story could have been written for me. Low on angst but high on feels, with characters who communicate well, hot sex scenes, and memorable secondary characters, I couldn’t have asked for more. What I am asking for, however, is more stories set in Pendleton. This little town is fast turning into a favourite (reading) destination for me.

“Can I see you again? Tonight? Please, Mallory, give me another chance.” He smiles softly, making my heart skip a beat.
“I can’t do tonight. I’m here ‘til ten o’clock.” I look over my shoulder, and my boss is scowling at me, his arms folded over his chest. “I’ve got to get to work. I’m sorry, Archer. Maybe another day.” I scurry away, avoiding eye contact with my boss and serve the next customer.
“I’ll be here at ten, Mallory,” Archer calls out as he walks out.
“This isn’t a pick-up joint, Halston. Get to work,” Mr. Kowolski mutters to me before
stomping back to his office.
Carl looks at me and gives me a smile. “He’s a hot guy, rich too. You should go for him.” He winks and carries on serving.
The day is long, and I’m hot and sweaty by the time I finish. All I want to do is go back to my room and get under a cold shower. The night has cooled down, but even in darkness, the heat is suffocating. I walk out the kitchen door and see Archer waiting for me. He smiles and pushes off from the wall. I look at his long legs clad in denim tonight, and a tight-fitting short-sleeved shirt shows off his broad chest, making me swallow hard.
“You shouldn’t have come out again, Archer. I’m tired and in desperate need of a shower and my bed. Can we take a raincheck?” I ask quietly as he approaches me.
His green eyes darken as he looks me over. “I’m here now, and I can offer you both of those options if you’d like to come back to my place.” His voice is deep and husky as he steps into my space.
“Huh? I don’t think that’s a good idea. We don’t know each other.” I struggle to speak as I inhale the crisp citrus scent of his cologne.
“What better way to find out more.” His mouth is so close to mine I can feel his warm
breath washing over my dry lips. I slide my tongue over my lower lip, dampening it or maybe trying to capture his flavor. My eyes flutter as I feel his mouth brush over mine, a touch so light I could have almost believed I imagined it until I hear him sigh.
“Shit,” I mutter under my breath. My heart beats frantically in my chest as I crave for
his touch.
“Come back with me, Mallory.” His words resonate in my chest, making my refusal
impossible. I nod my head and let him take my hand. “Thank you,” he whispers.

“I would have thought an important guy like you would have minions to fetch your coffee for you.” I laugh as hot coffee guy, as I now call him, comes up to the counter.
“I could, but then I wouldn’t get to speak to you, now would I?” He winks. “I didn’t see you here yesterday? I didn’t get anywhere nearly as much foam on my cappuccino from the sullen girl.”
“I don’t work here every day. I’m in college so it just fits around my schoolwork.” I blush, I didn’t expect him to notice whether I was here or not.
“What time do you finish today?” he asks.
“Why?” I carry on making his order, knowing he won’t move off until it’s finished.
“I wondered if you’d like to grab a drink or maybe something to eat with me,” he asks. I just stare at him; my mouth drops in surprise. “You’re old enough to drink?” he queries and smiles, but it’s not in condescension.
“Um, yeah, I am. But why do you want to have a drink with me? You don’t even know me.” Admittedly I’ve seen him every day I’ve been here, and he does wait for me to serve him. Letting others past until I get to him.
He laughs, and it sends shivers over my body. “I guess that’s why I would like to have a drink, to get to know you. So, what do you say?” His tongue darts out and dampens his bottom lip, and I follow the motion, unable to tear my eyes away.
“I can’t tonight. I have a study group. I go straight from here.” I hand him his drinks.
“Tomorrow then?” He leans forward and whispers, “I really would like to get to know you, Mallory.” His voice is husky in my ear.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea, I’m sorry.” I’m already kicking myself for turning him down.
“That’s okay. I’ll ask again tomorrow, and the day after. I’ll get you to say yes in the end.” With that, he winks and moves off to pay.
And he does just that, the next day, and the one after that. Then I have two days off and when I get back to work, I look forward to seeing him again, but he doesn’t show up. The day seems to drag on and on. Plus, summer has arrived, and the temperatures have rocketed, making every customer be in a bad mood. Hell, we’re all in a bad mood. I finally look up at the clock and realize I can leave. I can’t get out of there fast enough.
I rush out the kitchen door and straight into the furnace as the heat hits me in the face. Dragging my t-shirt over my head and tucking it into my back pocket, I walk away, then hear someone whistle and call out my name. Turning to the sound, I see hot coffee guy standing outside the shop front.
“Mallory.” He sounds breathless as his eyes roam over my bare chest. “What a pleasant surprise. I was just thinking about you.”
“Really? It can hardly be a surprise considering I work here.” I tip my head and look him over. He’s not all dressed up in one of his fancy suits today. He’s dressed in a cute pair of pale-blue shorts and a white polo shirt; his sunglasses are on the top of his head, pushing his blond hair away from his forehead. Giving him a much more approachable look, and a younger one too.

Blurb

When you find a place where lust and sex rule life, and your every desire can be fulfilled, why would you ever want to leave?

Young runaway Scot and his boyfriend Jerry escape their deadbeat homes and families, hoping to leave prejudice behind them and travel to a new life in Las Vegas. Unprepared and naive, they're lost almost at once, and shelter at a run-down, deserted motel in the middle of the scorching hot Nevada desert. A place with secrets, run by staff both gorgeous and uninhibited, and driven by a mysterious sexual connection Scot’s never even dared to dream.

All but drugged by the lazy heat and the hedonism around him, Scot watches as Jerry is seduced away and realizes their relationship was nothing more than shared lust. Restless, Scot knows he wants true love and real understanding. Could he find it with the mysterious and elusive owner of the motel, Connor Maxwell? Connor seems to think so, every time he appears and pursues Scot for his own. But where does Connor come from? It seems the passion calls him into being at its own whim.

Eventually, what binds Connor and his friends to the motel may be too strong for Scot to break through. Scot has ambitions to travel, to make something of his life – but is his only option to embrace life at the motel in his true lover’s arms?

Or will that love be strong enough to release them both...

My Thoughts:

“It’s the stuff of your imagination. Your dreams,” Connor murmured. “Isn’t it?”

This is one stunning and extra-special book.

Sensual, sexy even, with an understated note of creepy, I experienced—felt—this story as much as I read it. Sweet Summer Sweat mesmerized me, which was very appropriate considering it’s all about two young men being mesmerized by the motel where they end up and the three men who exist there. I loved how conflicted Scot felt, torn between being seduced by his surroundings— by the constant sensuality surrounding him—and his yearning for freedom and the wider world. I could feel his confusion and understood how he tittered on the edge of giving in to the promise of unending intimacy only to be pulled back from the edge by the knowledge that it might not be enough for him, that his dreams were bigger than that.

The connection between these five men, but especially between Scot and Connor, is like something out of a dream; they can hear each other’s thoughts, touch each other without physical contact, and recognise each other without ever having met before. At first glance it would appear that Scot and Jerry have stumbled upon their personal version of paradise. But while the motel may be exactly what Jerry needs, Scot can’t escape the feeling that what looks like heaven could just as easily turn out to be hell.

I loved the magical realism in this book. The motel and what happens there is definitely otherworldly, and yet because we experience it all through Scot’s eyes, emotions, and thoughts we are never fully ripped from the real world. I’m glad that we never get a full explanation of exactly what is going on in the Motel, or how any of it is possible. The mystery, the magic of it all, only added to the charm of this story.

I’m in awe of the way in which Clare London managed to tell a lot of this story not through dialogue or thoughts but through sensuality, physical contact and intimacy. This is one of the sexiest stories I’ve ever read and yet at no point did it feel as if the sex was there for any other reason than to push the story forward, to explain the characters’ emotions to the readers.

This is one of those occasions when my vocabulary isn’t big enough to convey all the emotions I felt while reading this book. The story pulled me into a magical spell and captured me, not unlike the way in which the motel captured Jerry and Scot. And just like those two young men discover that they can’t really (bring themselves to) leave the motel, I found it impossible to look away from my Kindle until I’d finished the story.

The ending of this book is deliciously ambiguous. Not as far as the happily ever after is concerned, but other than that it is up to the reader to decide what happens next, and I love it when a story allows me to fantasize on after I’ve read the last page of a book.

On a final note I want to say this. As soon as I read the blurb I was reminded of the song ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles. Now that I’ve read the book I’m convinced that Clare London was inspired by this song; the coincidences would be too extra-ordinary otherwise. For example, the lyrics say the following:

*Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis*

And then, at some point Connor says to Scot: “You had your own agenda, your own alibis”. And later on in reference to another part of the song, Connor says: “A prisoner…well, I can see how it might be seen like that. But it’s by my own device, Scot.” Of course, the biggest clue can be found in the title itself.

For me this connection was perfect. I’ve loved the song and the story its lyrics tell since the very first time I heard it, and it has always been a source of inspiration for me—the words allowed all sorts of stories to pop up in my head long before I ever thought about writing. It is wonderful to read a book that mirrors the fantasies I’ve had over the years so closely. In fact, it’s a bit like the story in this book, stunning and at the same time somewhat creepy. Scot and Connor can hear each other’s thoughts and that is very easy to believe when it feels as if the author has been listening to mine.

Author Bio:

Clare London took her pen name from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with her other day job as an accountant.

She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with award-winning novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy.
Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic, and sexy characters.

Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter three stage and plenty of other projects in mind... she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.
