Nothing Ventured by Jay Northcote - Review Tour

Cover Design: Garrett Leigh @ Black Jazz Design

Blurb

Mud, sweat, and reluctant romance. Can Aiden and Matt sort out their feelings before race day?

When Aiden agrees to run the Mad Mucker—a twelve-mile muddy slog over an obstacle course—he’s expecting it to be a bit of a laugh. The training will be tough, but Aiden could use the motivation to regain some fitness.

Matt is the sexy cousin of one of Aiden’s coworkers and a last-minute addition to the team. When he agrees to train with Aiden, Aiden suddenly finds the prospect of regular workouts a lot more appealing.

Soon attraction flares, and they embark on an intense physical relationship. Matt doesn’t want to fall in love with a man, and Aiden doesn’t want to fall in love at all, but despite their insistence on no strings, they grow closer. As the day of the race approaches, time is running out for them to work out how they feel about each other.

Joe deserves better. Meeting Dylan helps him see that.

After a recent redundancy, Joe takes a few months off to try and make it as a writer. His partner, Harry, is less than supportive but Joe is used to that after ten years together, just like he’s used to Harry’s controlling nature and his drinking habit.

Dylan, a server at Rainbow Place, is fascinated by Joe as he sits in the cafĂ© and works on his laptop. His attempts to flirt are met with awkwardness at first, but gradually Joe opens up. Dylan is disappointed when he learns Joe isn’t single. As their friendship develops he begins to worry about the nature of Joe’s relationship, especially when he witnesses Harry’s behaviour in person. Abuse isn’t always physical, and Dylan knows that from experience. His concern helps Joe see his relationship for what it is, and gives him the courage to end things with Harry.

Free to act on their mutual attraction, Joe and Dylan dive headlong into something that becomes serious fast. Joe revels in the passion and intimacy he’s been missing out on for so long, but Dylan is worried that Joe is on the rebound. He puts on the brakes, knowing that they need to slow down to make this last. For this new relationship to work, Joe needs to show Dylan that he’s ready to move on from the past.

Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone and has a satisfying happy ending.

Two clashing colleagues stuck together for Christmas—will opposites eventually attract?

Patrick has been single since he broke up with his cheating ex almost a year ago. With Christmas looming, he’s resigned to spending it alone with only memories of happier times for company. When a business trip with a co-worker leaves them stranded in the Lake District due to heavy snow, it seems Patrick will have company for Christmas after all. It’s a shame his companion is Kyle, who’s undeniably attractive, but annoying as hell.

Aware of Patrick’s reluctant admiration, Kyle basks in the attention even though Patrick isn’t the type of man he normally goes for. Averse to relationships after being hurt in the past, Kyle enjoys the occasional hook up, but has given up on seeking anything more meaningful.

Stuck together, their antagonism escalates along with a heavy dose of sexual tension until it finally ignites. What starts as a Christmas fling soon feels like something special; but will their tentative connection melt away as the snow thaws? If they’re going to take a chance on finding happiness together, they’ll have to put their differences aside and learn to trust one another.

Contains: enemies-to-lovers, snowball fights, bickering, spanking, a cute dog, a wise old lady, mistletoe, and a happy ending (of course).

Length: 48,000 words approx.

Rainbow Place Series

Book #1 - Rainbow Place - Amazon US | Amazon UK

Blurb

Where do you go when your home is no longer a safe place?

Alex is about to turn eighteen and is firmly in the closet. He’s been biding his time, waiting to escape to uni, and finally come out away from the oppressive influence of his homophobic father. When he flunks his exams, he’s stuck in the small town of Porthladock—and what’s worse is that he’s working for his dad. The only thing that makes it bearable is Cam.

Cam’s comfortable with his bisexuality, but he doesn’t broadcast it. Young, free, and single, his social life revolves around playing rugby and hanging out with his mates. He’s attracted to Alex, but with the six-year age gap, Cam’s wary of getting involved. Plus, he thinks Alex needs a friend more than he needs a lover, and as their friendship grows, Cam decides he’s not willing to risk ruining it for casual sex.

When Alex’s dad finds out about his sexuality, Alex is suddenly both jobless and homeless. He finds work at Rainbow Place, the local LGBT-friendly cafĂ© and Cam lets Alex stay in his flat for a while. But Alex would rather be sleeping in Cam’s bed than on his sofa. With them both living under one roof, their feelings for each other grow stronger, and the sexual tension is hard to ignore. Will giving in to it ruin their friendship and complicate things for Alex even more?

Although this book is part of a linked series, it has a satisfying happy ending, and can be enjoyed as a standalone.

Review

If I had to review Safe Place in one sentence I’d say it’s a quintessential Jay Northcote book in that it is a very well written story featuring two engaging and charming main characters (as well as a cast of fascinating secondaries) and a love story that meets quite a few bumps in the road without ever venturing into the realm of heavy angst. But, I’ve got a feeling you may want to hear a bit more about this book. J

While we meet characters we first encountered in Rainbow Place in this story, the blurb is absolutely right when it states Safe Place can be perfectly read as a standalone. And it isn’t wrong when it mentions a satisfying happy ending either—but boy did Alex and Cam face a journey before they got there.

If ever there was a slow burn romance, this is it. Cam and Alex spend the majority of this story circling each other. The attraction between them is undeniable and increasingly hard to ignore but they hang on to their friends-only pact with dogged determination. Especially Cam is convinced keeping things platonic is the best option; initially because he doesn’t want to risk Alex’s homophobic father finding out and subsequently because he is afraid he’ll lose Alex completely if taking things further doesn’t work out. If I’m perfectly honest I have to admit that there were one or two moments when I would have happily slapped him (or at least given him a stern talking to) for trying to deny the obvious for so long. The main reason I didn’t end up exasperated is because his reluctance to give in to his attraction to Alex was rooted in him caring for Alex rather than for selfish reasons. But, that doesn’t mean I didn’t mutter ‘at fucking last’ when Alex and Cam finally face up to the inevitable and follow their hearts.

I guess what I love most about this book and its prequel, is the wonderful community Jay has created. The Rainbow Place crew and customers are such a supportive and loving group of people it warms my heart. The sense of friendship, loyalty and support in these pages is so strong it is impossible not to experience its warm embrace while reading.

Another thing that warmed my heart was how Alex grew into himself, found his strength and started to forge his own way; moving away from his father’s judgement and demands in the process.

Overall, Safe Place is a wonderful, easy to read feel-good story. I strongly suggest you get yourself a copy if you want to lift yourself up and finish a book with a huge, happy smile on your face.

Can Jason find the courage he needs to be the man Seb deserves?

When Seb Radcliffe relocates to a seaside town in Cornwall, he feels like a fish out of water. He misses queer spaces and the sense of community he enjoyed when he was living in the city, and decides to open an LGBT-friendly cafe–bar.

Jason Dunn is the builder Seb hires to help renovate the rundown space where the cafe will be housed. Jason is also gay, but unlike Seb, he’s deep in the closet. He’s never had a relationship with another man—only allowing himself the occasional hook up with guys who are prepared to be discreet.

The attraction between the two men is instant and impossible to ignore. But while Seb is out and proud, Jason is terrified of being exposed. With the grand opening of Rainbow Place approaching, tension is growing among some locals who object to Seb’s plans. When things escalate, Jason is forced to choose whether to hide in the shadows and let Seb down, or to openly support the man he’s fallen so hard for.

Although this book is part of a series, it has a satisfying happy ending and can be read as a standalone.

Review

“What once felt like a safe space, now felt like a prison”

By now I’ve been reading MM for long enough that there are a few authors I would recognize even if their name wasn’t on the cover of a book. Jay Northcote is such a writer. His voice is unmistakable and fluent, his characters are always realistic and familiar, and the stories never fail to capture me from start to finish.

All of the above is true for Rainbow Place. Both Seb and Jason could be the ‘man next door’ with dreams, insecurities and fears most if not all people can recognize. And the same can be said for the secondary characters. The slow burn coming together of these two men was as mesmerizing as it was at times frustrating. Jason’s fears are as easy to understand as Seb’s occasional impatience. And yet, I have to admit that I lost patience with Jason at one point and even found myself wishing, for a few pages, that this particular romance would not come with a happy ever after. Of course, that says more about me than it does about the story, the author, or even the character in question. And to say that Jason made up for his mistake in the most fabulous fashion, would be a gross understatement. Suffice to say it made me grin from ear to ear even while I teared up right along with Seb.

I adored the idea of Rainbow Place; the world, especially in smaller communities, could do with more establishments like the one Seb is starting up. The balanced way in which the reception of the news that this café was about to open was received impressed me. The very realistic, but very hard to read, hatred was only bearable thanks to the subsequent support shown by others.

As I said before, Jay writes stories about real people, living in the real world. That doesn’t always make for easy reading, because our real world isn’t always a nice place. The fact that his characters get their happy ever after, despite the world’s (and sometimes their own) best efforts to jeopardize such an ending, never fails to leave me feeling uplifted and hopeful when I finish the story.

In other, and fewer, words. Rainbow Place is yet another great read from Jay Northcote. I can’t wait to discover who else will find their happy within the walls of this wonderful cafĂ©.

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make you appreciate what you have.
There are lots of things that brighten Joel’s life. His three-year-old daughter Evie is one. His close relationship with her mother, his best friend from university, is another. Joel’s boyfriend, Dan, adds spice to his child-free nights, and Joel is pretty happy with how things are.

One cold and rainy night, everything changes. Joel’s life is turned upside-down when he becomes a full-time dad to Evie, and his previously carefree relationship with Dan cracks under the strain.

Meeting Liam, who acts as if getting hurt isn’t a foregone conclusion, shakes Joel to the core. Their attraction is mutual, and Liam makes no secret of how serious he is about Joel. But Joel is wary.
