Charlie King is doing fine. Sure, he’s a widower raising a teenage daughter who just got her first boyfriend, his book series isn’t writing itself, and he has a crush on his new neighbor — the guy next door. But everything’s just fine.

Simon Lynley is doing better. He moved to Bethlehem to fall out of love and rebuild his career. An affair with his neighbor isn’t part of the plan, but the attraction between them is too hard to ignore.

But when Simon’s ex follows him to Pennsylvania seeking reconciliation, and Charlie’s life starts to feel like a video on repeat, everything comes apart. Charlie worries that he’s failing as a father, and Simon is a distraction he can’t afford. Meanwhile Simon doesn’t know if he could survive being left again, and he hasn’t come all this way to make the same mistakes. But despite their fears, it’s only together that they’ll find the strength to slay old foes and build the forever they’ve been waiting for.

Review

*Sighs* Such a wonderful, heartwarming, and charming book.

Some books are like a whirlwind, picking you up and not letting you rest again until you’ve read the last page. Other books are like a comfortable blanket, wrapping you up in their warmth and leaving you with a huge smile on your face and a warm heart. Building Forever squarely lands in the second group, although I did have a hard time putting the book down when life interfered with my reading.

I dare anyone to read this book and not fall at least a little bit in love with both Charlie and Simon. Charlie is nothing short of adorable with his run-away motor-mouth and Simon is such a wonderful study in contrasts between his calm exterior and his inner turmoil. Both men struggle with relationships that have ended; Charlie’s due to his wife’s way too early death and Simon at the hands of a cheating long-term partner. And both of them fully deserve this opportunity to find happiness again.

I loved that Charlie’s bisexuality wasn’t an issue for either man. Charlie has always known he is attracted to men. The fact that he’s never had an opportunity to explore that attraction because his former wife pregnancy when they were both still teenagers put a stop to any experiments…until now. Simon arrives at exactly the right time for Charlie to widen his sexual horizons.

This is mostly a smooth, even-paced and gentle story with few large emotions or upsets. But, when shit does hit the fan and throws Charlie into a backward spin, it is for completely understandable and relatable reasons. What’s more, it’s thankfully not dragged out and dealt with in a way that is as charming as it is believable.

This book features a fabulous cast of secondary characters who add to the story and allow us to see both Simon and Charlie from various perspectives and the writing is pristine, faultless even. So I have no problem summarizing my feelings about this book as follows: Building Forever was a winner for me. A wonderful story featuring charming protagonists, a gentle and enthralling love-story, and endless moments that brought numerous smiles to my face. I’m looking forward to the next titles in this trilogy.

He always has a plan…

Jesse Preston is exactly where he always wanted to be: in LA, recording an album. So why does he feel like he’s about to lose everything? One thing he’s sure of is that he needs to keep his bisexuality hidden… but he never planned on falling for someone. Not just anyone—a TV star who’s one half of a famous, and straight, celebrity couple.

One kiss can change everything…

Grayson Adler is used to pretending. He’s an actor after all. So when he’s asked to keep his break-up with his troubled co-star a secret he has no problem playing along. He also has no problem showing Jesse around LA. Grayson likes spending time with him, likes making him laugh, likes him more than he’d ever expected. But they’re just friends, right?

In a town where everybody’s got secrets, how can they be sure of what’s real?

This novel can be read as a standalone. It’s complete at 60,000 words, with no cliffhanger and no cheating. It does feature ping-pong, hats, dance breaks, and explicit scenes between adult men.

Excerpt

Grayson came to stand close and Jesse had to take a sudden intake of air as the force of Grayson's gaze locked on. His eyes—brown, or this close, revealed to be hazel and shot through with green-gold streaks—were on Jesse's and nothing could make him look away.

"I shouldn't have left things like that. I shouldn't have left."

"It's okay," Jesse started to say, but Grayson kept going.

"No. You need to know something. I don't have a girlfriend. I mean, I did, but Annabel and I broke up months ago. I'm supposed to keep it quiet so she doesn't have to deal with the press, and so the studio can keep promoting us as a couple on and off the show. Annabel's fragile right now so I don't mind it being a secret… except I don't like lying to you. I really don't like it. And I think I've been doing it a lot because you weren't wrong before. I was hitting on you, I just didn't realize it. This is stupid because twenty-four is too old to be having a sudden sexual awakening—except thinking back, maybe I've always been looking at guys along with girls? I just thought it was a professional interest in studying their bodies. And I did play the love interest of a boy on a family cable drama when I was sixteen. I really liked our kissing scenes, but I was going through a Method phase at the time, so I thought it was about inhabiting the character. My role was only a three-episode arc though, and I had a girlfriend, so I never really got to explore what it might mean—"

Jesse realized that Grayson showed no signs of slowing down or even taking a breath, so he did the most obvious thing and kissed him.

Stroke of Luck by Posy Roberts

86 pages
Holiday Novella
Buy links: Amazon    Amazon UK

The blurb:

After everything Marc owned burned to a crisp, he’s living off the kindness of others. A model condo is his temporary home, and his last dime went to essentials. He doesn’t need another distraction, but the fates conspire against him, setting up a chain of encounters that bring him face to face with Cas.

Cas’s love life has been in limbo for years, lovers moving on as soon as they discover how close he is to his best friend, Maisie. Then he meets Marc. The attraction between the two men can’t be denied, but Cas isn’t sure he can risk his friendship for a guy who will only end up leaving when he sees how close he and Maisie are.

When Marc and Cas discover they live in the same building, it’s kismet. But Marc has to invite chaos into his life if he and Cas stand a chance, and Cas faces a choice between friendship and love. Luck may be on their side... if they're willing to risk it all.

My thoughts:

Stroke of Luck is such a sweet and fun story, even if the title seems completely inappropriate at first glance. Because initially everything that can go wrong does go wrong for Marc and Cas.  Poor Marc is trying to come to terms with having lost everything he owned in a house fire when he first runs into Cas. A misunderstanding makes Cas all defensive before he shows he’s actually a nice guy in the most simple but wonderful of ways.

When they meet again, only a few minutes later, the circumstances are even worse. In fact, you’d be excused for thinking these two men were doomed from the start. Except that fate sometimes plays a strange game with people, as Marc and Cas soon discover. Wherever they turn they end up running into each other because even if they don’t know it yet, they are meant to be together.

I’m impressed with how well Posy Roberts managed to deal with the complex issue of the relationship between Cas and Maisie in a mostly lighthearted and virtually angst-free manner. And the way this book ends is nothing short of perfection. To say it left me with a huge grin on my face would be a gross understatement.

Posy Roberts always effortlessly draws me into her stories. Her characters tend to be charming and fascinating, her descriptions are vivid and the dialogue sparkles. And when it comes to the sexy times…hot barely covers it.

If you’re in the mood for a fun, far from predictable, and very satisfying read, I highly recommend Stroke of Luck. In the meantime I’ll thank my lucky stars that I discovered Posy’s books and that she keeps on writing these wonderful stories for me to enjoy.

About Posy

Fall Together by Isobel Starling - Blog Tour

Author: Isobel Starling

Length: 524 pages

Blurb

Two Hearts collide on a London Tube train...

Artist Emily Raven really has no choice in getting up close and personal with model Pieter Bayer when they’re pushed together in a crowded train carriage. Their close proximity kindles a conversation, which leads to them discovering they have an acquaintance in common, that of art director Darien Hollgoode. So, when Pieter invites the artist to accompany him to the photo shoot he’s heading to, Emily decides it’s a perfect opportunity to catch up with her roguish old friend Darien, and spend time with her gorgeous new friend, Pieter.

They begin a deeply erotic affair. However, not everyone is happy about their blossoming relationship.

Pieter’s best-friend Simeon is secretly in love with him, and Emily’s manipulative old friend, Darien, holds an explosive secret to Pieter’s past... that will change everything.

Set between Berlin and London, this beautifully life affirming erotic romantic tale tells of how two damaged souls learn to trust again and in trusting each other, find that 'something more'.

This book was previously published under the title "Schonling" and was re-titled in 2016.

Please note: There are scenes of a sexual nature in this book and strong language through out. Reader discretion is advised.

My thoughts

This story in Fall Together takes the reader on a fast paced and very erotic ride. From the moment Emilie and Pieter first literally bump into each other in an overstuffed tube carriage in London, to the moment when they’ve created their own perfect world together, these two barely come up for breath, and as a result, neither does the reader.

From the moment Emilie first glares at Pieter it is clear that these two are made for each other, even if it will be another five weeks before they get to act on the attraction they both instantly feel. And when they do get together Emilie and Pieter manage to set each other alight. When it’s just the two of them, there’s no doubt these two characters belong together, if only the rest of the world would stop putting obstacles in their way.

Personally I enjoyed the chapters and scenes featuring Emilie and Pieter getting to know each other and exploring each others’ bodies more than I did those featuring almost every secondary character. It would appear that both Pieter the model and Emilie the artist have managed to surround themselves with people who use and/or abuse them. The mystery for me wasn’t so much that these things had happened to them, but more that the people who’d caused them pain and confusion where, for the most part, still an important part of their lives. I couldn’t find any redeeming qualities in either Simeon or Darien and was at a loss why they were still part of Pieter and Emilie’s life when the story starts.

The funny thing is that for once it wasn’t the main characters themselves who created obstacles to overcome on their way to happiness; it was the people around them. Where it would have been easy to turn the age difference between them or the fact that Pieter is bisexual, or even their individual careers forcing them to spend huge chunks of time apart, into relationship threatening issues, none of them do. Any conflict in this story is the result of outside forces trying to come between them and forcing them to deal with forgotten or repressed and at times heartbreaking memories in the process.

This is a very erotic story and the sex scenes are beautiful as well as imaginative and enticing. There isn’t much Emilie and Pieter aren’t up for, and the reader gets to enjoy it all with them.

One thing that didn’t work very well for me is the fact that the story is written from multiple perspectives and that the point of view freely jumped from one character to another. A small voice in the back of my mind kept on saying ‘stop head-hopping already’, even though I was well aware that strictly speaking this wasn’t head-hopping at all, just a different way of telling the story. This however is a personal preference and I can easily imagine that other readers might be delighted to for once get to see everybody’s motivation rather than having to infer it from what the main characters chose to share.

Overall this was a sexy, fast paced and intriguing story. And while I really didn’t care for Simeon in this story I have to admit I am kinda intrigued that the next book in this Pretty Boy series will focus on him. He’s got quite a bit of redeeming to do and I’m very curious as to what form that will take.

Author Bio

Inspiration strikes at the strangest of times.

Born in Germany, Isobel Starling spent most of her twenty-year professional career making art.  She relocated to the UK and, faced with the dreaded artist’s creative block, Isobel started to write and found she loved it more than making art.

Isobel’s first novel “Schonling” was a best seller in the GLBT-Bisexual genre on the ‘All Romance ebooks’ site.  She mainly writes M/M Romantic comedy thrillers and has just completed her sixth book.  Isobel has also signed French translation rights for novella “As You Wish”.

Isobel adores the M/M genre and enjoys writing about wounded souls and the complexities of personal relationships.  Despite not having found proof yet, Isobel believes in love at first sight and endeavors to give her men a thrilling journey and a satisfying ending!

HALF MOON HOUSE by Theo Fenraven

HALF MOON HOUSE by Theo Fenraven

Pages: 175
Date: July 2015
E-book

The blurb:

“Abandoned by an industry that has been decimated by the economy, and struggling in a marriage that isn’t quite the stuff of dreams, Jon Donovan is ready for a change. It appears in the shape of Cass Allen—as comfortable in a skirt and heels as he is in jeans—who has happily spent his life drifting from place to place and job to job.

Pragmatic and practical meets mystical and magical as they start a new business, help solve a murder, and are blindsided by a devastating betrayal neither of them saw coming.

The tiny house community has two new advocates, but Jon and Cass will only find their happy ending if they are willing to give up who they were and become the men they are supposed to be.”

My thoughts:

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to be allowed to beta-read Half Moon House for the author.

Anyone who regularly reads my reviews knows that I’m a huge fan of Theo Fenraven’s writing. Ever since I first read Blue River in December 2013, I’ve been in awe of the way he manipulates words and his huge range when it comes to subjects and genres. It therefore won’t come as a big surprise when I say that once again this author managed to write a story which blew me away. I can’t believe Mr. Fenraven managed to surprise me once again J

It is a lot easier to tell you what Half Moon House isn’t than exactly what it is. Without giving anything away, because this book should be experienced without any preconceived ideas, I can say Half Moon House gives the reader romance, devastating heart break, a mystery, ghosts, and legal drama all as experienced by two characters who appear to have very little in common and yet are perfect for each other.

In previous reviews I have mentioned how much I love it when a book manages to surprise me, and Half Moon House did just that. Most books will tackle one or two issues and, if there are more, they tend to show up in a logical if far from realistic sequence. Real life doesn’t work that way. We all know that when something goes wrong in one part our lives it usually means shit is about to hit the fan in several other areas as well. The same is true for Jon in this book. His simple, if maybe not quite satisfying and somewhat boring, life is blown apart in this story and everything happens if not at exactly the same time than at least in very quick succession. As a result, neither the reader nor Jon and Cass are given the opportunity to catch their breath while they are hurled from one issue to the next.

Cass *sighs*. I fell hard and fast for Cass. While I liked Jon and hurt for him as his life fell apart, Cass dug his way into my heart and took up residence. There was nothing I didn’t like about him but his easy going attitude towards life resonated with me on a deep level.

And just when I thought the book couldn’t possibly hold any other surprises or delight me anymore than it already had, Theo Fenraven made my day by allowing me to spend more time with Percy Callendar and Sage Donovan from The Haunted Maze.

Long story short: I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. Theo Fenraven’s writing is as beautiful, descriptive yet sparse as always. His characters touched me and the story made me think about several issues. As a reading experience this book hit just about every one of my buttons. I am once again impressed.
