The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Rogan

302 Pages
Publisher: Two Roads
Book Club Read

Blurb

A charming, clever, and quietly moving debut novel of endless possibilities and joyful discoveries that explores the promises we make and break, losing and finding ourselves, the objects that hold magic and meaning for our lives, and the surprising connections that bind us.

Lime green plastic flower-shaped hair bobbles—Found, on the playing field, Derrywood Park, 2nd September.

Bone china cup and saucer— Found, on a bench in Riveria Public Gardens, 31st October.

Anthony Peardew is the keeper of lost things. Forty years ago, he carelessly lost a keepsake from his beloved fiancĂ©e, Therese. That very same day, she died unexpectedly. Brokenhearted, Anthony sought consolation in rescuing lost objects—the things others have dropped, misplaced, or accidently left behind—and writing stories about them. Now, in the twilight of his life, Anthony worries that he has not fully discharged his duty to reconcile all the lost things with their owners. As the end nears, he bequeaths his secret life’s mission to his unsuspecting assistant, Laura, leaving her his house and and all its lost treasures, including an irritable ghost.

Recovering from a bad divorce, Laura, in some ways, is one of Anthony’s lost things. But when the lonely woman moves into his mansion, her life begins to change. She finds a new friend in the neighbor’s quirky daughter, Sunshine, and a welcome distraction in Freddy, the rugged gardener. As the dark cloud engulfing her lifts, Laura, accompanied by her new companions, sets out to realize Anthony’s last wish: reuniting his cherished lost objects with their owners.

Long ago, Eunice found a trinket on the London pavement and kept it through the years. Now, with her own end drawing near, she has lost something precious—a tragic twist of fate that forces her to break a promise she once made.

As the Keeper of Lost Objects, Laura holds the key to Anthony and Eunice’s redemption. But can she unlock the past and make the connections that will lay their spirits to rest?

Review

Ugh. I’m having a very hard time writing this review. On the one hand, The Keeper of Lost Things is a sweet feel-good story and a very easy, undemanding read. And yet, it is so much more than that. It’s a story about being lost and found, a story about love, about connections, about friendship, trust and, maybe more than anything else, a story of redemption.

There is an awful lot going on in this book, and there are quite a lot characters, both as main players and in the background. There appear to be at least two, unconnected (or are they?) story-lines when the book begins, and it takes a few chapters before the story settles enough for the reader to fully understand who is who, if not how they all connect to each other.

I realize, these two paragraphs appear to contradict each other; how can a light, easy read possibly be as intricate as I describe? And try as I might, it’s not something I can explain, except to say that the apparent contradiction was one of several things that impressed me in this book. The way in which two story-lines, eventually, came together is rather ingenious, especially since, as soon as they did, I realized the clues had been there from the start.

And all of that is before I mention that there’s also a magical twist to this story, be it presented in such a matter of fact way that it never felt contrived or even out of the ordinary. I accepted Sunshine’s ‘sixth sense’ and the presence of a ghost as easily as I accepted the fully human characters. And, while I’m on the subject of characters, I liked virtually everyone I encountered on these pages. Some characters took some getting used to while others charmed their way in from the moment they were introduced, but all of them left an impression in the long run—even those who appeared to be an over-drawn caricature.

Maybe I’m making things too complicated. Underneath the magic, there’s a very human story of lost, hurting, and lonely people finding and helping each other, and in the process, themselves. The various tales are told in a gentle, light-hearted way and yet never disguise the deeper emotions laying underneath the surface, which I guess makes The Keeper of Lost Things a very good summer/beach read.

Professor Nate Reese rushes to protect a female student and is severely injured at the hands of her assailant. Traumatized by the attack, Nate sets his feet on a no-holds-barred path of activism designed to force university officials into addressing the issue of on-campus assault. At the same time, terrified of losing his hard-won status at the university, his partner, David Gardener, a veteran of 12 years as a very popular Professor, is reluctant to support Nate's militant efforts. Seemingly abandoned by his partner, Nate sees David's aversion to his activism as indifference to the trauma he suffered. Day by day they watch as their relationship disintegrates, while still struggling to resolve the disruptive issues engulfing the school they love.

In the meantime, Irishman Colin Campbell, handsome and charismatic Sergeant for the campus police force, fights his own on-going war against campus assault. But behind his obsessive desire to gain justice for victims lies a devastating secret which could forever destroy his fiercely independent facade and expose his deepest fear. Ultimately, it is Colin’s powerful connection to a steady, dark-eyed Title IX consultant which threatens to tear down his defenses and shatter the barriers protecting his heart.

Cocky and irresistible, the dynamic police officer was everything Joshua Abrams had ever longed for in a man, but Colin simply didn’t ‘do’ relationships. Unless Joshua would settle for a one-night stand, or a very short-term liaison, there was no room for him in Colin’s life. Yet even knowing this, he couldn’t keep himself from falling hopelessly in love with his ‘magic man’. Despite the passion between them, he knew his quiet, reclusive nature could never hope to entice the vibrant, freedom-loving Irishman, so eventually he begins to back slowly away.

Eventually, a disagreement over an oddly disturbing case causes Colin’s hot Irish temper to erupt and their relationship is irrevocably shattered. Heartbroken, and convinced that Colin is gone forever, Joshua flees Charlottesville without a word, leaving Colin adrift and inconsolable.

But Joshua Abrams hadn’t merely stepped over the indelible line Colin had drawn between his heart and the dangers of real love, he had burned through it like hot lava. Finally forced to acknowledge his love for Joshua and his desperate need to have the quiet, Jewish man by his side, Colin must now face the dark and long-suppressed memories which are irrevocably linked to his love for the handsome consultant. Without even a forwarding address to guide him, he vows to find Joshua and bring him home. Colin’s struggle to conquer his pride and fear in order to find the love of his life and achieve their happily ever after will touch your heart.

Four lives in turmoil fighting for the relationships they cherish, and at the heart of the struggle, a great university struggles to survive its most harrowing challenge.

Excerpt

Colin nodded, shaking his head as if trying to clear it. His fists loosened and he relaxed against Joshua's body soaking in the solid strength of his presence. "That day I blew up at you," he began after a moment. He lifted his head and met Joshua's eyes. "Jesus, Josh, I thought I was losing my mind! I totally lost it."

"Don't," Joshua said. "Don't. I understand now, Colin. Don't. You don't have to do this in one conversation. The O'Malley girl...,"

"ls a dead ringer for my sister, Kathleen," Colin finished, then shook his head again. "Hell, even my mother saw it." His head fell forward and he once again rested his forehead against Joshua’s shoulder.

"There's a lot more," he said, his voice still shaky. "A shit-load of stuff I should probably be telling a shrink... how I couldn't cry at her funeral or ever since then, how I got revenge against the bastard who raped her by catching guys who'd done the same to other girls...," he exhaled a sigh that seemed to come from the soles of his feet then glanced up at Joshua again. "And on and on and on..." He shuddered.

Joshua laughed softly. "You may not realize it," he murmured, "but you aretelling this stuff to a shrink."

Colin exhaled a quiet laugh then released Joshua and leaned back. He scrubbed both hands through his hair and gazed quietly toward the lake. "I came here to explain what happened the day we quarrelled and why it happened. But that's not the most important reason I'm here." He met Joshua's eyes. "I came here to ask you to forgive me and come back to Virginia with me."

Joshua met his gaze. "It had to have been hard," he said softly. "Coming here like this. Telling me all this. Took a lot of courage."

Colin snorted a cynical laugh. "Courage," he said scornfully. "I've been lurking in my apartment like a coward for months."

"How many people have heard the story you just told me?" Joshua asked.

"No one."

"Then shut-up. When I say it took courage I know what the fuck I'm talking about. Don't ever call yourself a coward again."

Colin glanced at him and smiled.

"This is what I do for a living, remember?"

Colin nodded. "Point taken. Now tell me you're coming back to Virginia with me."

Joshua sighed, his full lips pressed into a thin line. "Colin..." he frowning as if in pain. "Jesus, Colin."

"You don't believe in him," Colin observed with a half-smile."

Joshua shot him a look. "Fact is, we do, but that's not the point. Colin, I've got a job. I've made peace with my family... actually grown close to them. I've started to feel happy here. I don't know if I..."

"When does the job start?"

"Next week," Joshua told him.

"Screw the job. Tell them you changed your mind. You have to come back with me."

Joshua stared at him, his mouth half-open. "Colin, wait. Wait. Just let me…" He leaned back, shaking his head. "This is all happening too fast."

"No, it's not. It didn't happen nearly fast enough!"

"Colin, you can't be sure. You can't mean…,"

"I do mean it, Josh! And I AM sure!"

"So I can come back to Virginia and be your fuck buddy?" Joshua asked then shook his head and pulled away, his hands dropping to his sides. "We've talked about this. I can't do it, Colin. Not with you. I just ca-"

"No!" Colin interrupted. He re-captured Joshua's hands in his. "No, Josh! That's not what I want!" He stared down at their joined hands for a count of three, as if gathering courage then inhaled deeply and spoke: "There are no fuck buddies. When you left Virginia any desire other men went with you. I just want you, Josh. Only you. No one else. Just you." He shook his head and looked at Joshua, quirking his brow comically.

"Well, that’s a pretty stunning admission for Charlottesville's champion stud-muffin."

Colin huffed a quick ironic laugh.

Joshua pulled his hands from Colin’s grip and captured the handsome Irish face between his palms. "Listen to me," he said, staring into Colin's eyes. "You've never wanted an exclusive relationship. Not with me. Not with anyone. Why is it different now?" His hands dropped to his sides. “Why?”

Colin sighed again and gave Joshua a rueful smile. "Hang on a second, OK?" After a moment he drew in another deep breath and recaptured Joshua’s hands in his own. "I -" he began, then glanced up at Joshua and swallowed hard. "It’s different now because I love you, Josh." His eyes widened. "Holy crap."

They both gave a short burst of laughter at the surprise in Colin's voice, then sat in silence, hands clasped while the lowering sun cast evening shadows over their shelter amid the driftwood. Finally, Colin lifted Joshua's hand to his lips and kissed it.

"That's about it, buddy. That's my full confession. I'm sure there's stuff I've left out, but if you come home with me I'll hire you as my full time shrink and you can get the rest of it out of me a little at a time." He collapsed forward into Joshua's arms and moaned. "Oh, Christ, Josh, I'm so fucking tired."

Joshua stroked his back nuzzling against his hair. "I don't doubt it."

"Is this what you call a breakthrough?" Colin asked, his voice muffled against Joshua's down jacket.

"More like a break down," Joshua replied, smiling, his hand still moving in slow circles on Colin's back.

Colin lifted his head and looked into Joshua's dark eyes. "Tell me you'll come home with me," he said. "Please." He lifted his hand and twirled one of Joshua's curls slowly, sensuously, around his index finger. "Please," he repeated in a hoarse whisper. "I need you, Josh. Nothing's right in my life without you."

He felt Joshua's presence in that moment as a still pool, a quiet and serene place of healing and love beyond any condition or expectation. And the truth of his words echoed through every fibre of his being. "Josh," he whispered, "I love you. Please come home."

Can Jason find the courage he needs to be the man Seb deserves?

When Seb Radcliffe relocates to a seaside town in Cornwall, he feels like a fish out of water. He misses queer spaces and the sense of community he enjoyed when he was living in the city, and decides to open an LGBT-friendly cafe–bar.

Jason Dunn is the builder Seb hires to help renovate the rundown space where the cafe will be housed. Jason is also gay, but unlike Seb, he’s deep in the closet. He’s never had a relationship with another man—only allowing himself the occasional hook up with guys who are prepared to be discreet.

The attraction between the two men is instant and impossible to ignore. But while Seb is out and proud, Jason is terrified of being exposed. With the grand opening of Rainbow Place approaching, tension is growing among some locals who object to Seb’s plans. When things escalate, Jason is forced to choose whether to hide in the shadows and let Seb down, or to openly support the man he’s fallen so hard for.

Although this book is part of a series, it has a satisfying happy ending and can be read as a standalone.

Review

“What once felt like a safe space, now felt like a prison”

By now I’ve been reading MM for long enough that there are a few authors I would recognize even if their name wasn’t on the cover of a book. Jay Northcote is such a writer. His voice is unmistakable and fluent, his characters are always realistic and familiar, and the stories never fail to capture me from start to finish.

All of the above is true for Rainbow Place. Both Seb and Jason could be the ‘man next door’ with dreams, insecurities and fears most if not all people can recognize. And the same can be said for the secondary characters. The slow burn coming together of these two men was as mesmerizing as it was at times frustrating. Jason’s fears are as easy to understand as Seb’s occasional impatience. And yet, I have to admit that I lost patience with Jason at one point and even found myself wishing, for a few pages, that this particular romance would not come with a happy ever after. Of course, that says more about me than it does about the story, the author, or even the character in question. And to say that Jason made up for his mistake in the most fabulous fashion, would be a gross understatement. Suffice to say it made me grin from ear to ear even while I teared up right along with Seb.

I adored the idea of Rainbow Place; the world, especially in smaller communities, could do with more establishments like the one Seb is starting up. The balanced way in which the reception of the news that this café was about to open was received impressed me. The very realistic, but very hard to read, hatred was only bearable thanks to the subsequent support shown by others.

As I said before, Jay writes stories about real people, living in the real world. That doesn’t always make for easy reading, because our real world isn’t always a nice place. The fact that his characters get their happy ever after, despite the world’s (and sometimes their own) best efforts to jeopardize such an ending, never fails to leave me feeling uplifted and hopeful when I finish the story.

In other, and fewer, words. Rainbow Place is yet another great read from Jay Northcote. I can’t wait to discover who else will find their happy within the walls of this wonderful cafĂ©.

Love has never been a good bet for Chris, so going on a Vegas wedding trip for his friends is bittersweet. Especially when Ant, the last man to break his trust, is suddenly along for the ride. Which explains why Chris wakes up in his hotel room with the mother of all hangovers. Not so much why Ant is in his bed ... or worse, wearing a matching wedding band.

Ant invited himself on a Vegas trip, gambling on a second chance with the man who got away. He never dreamt he'd be the one with a wedding ring on his finger, but if their predicament gets Chris talking to him again, he'll make the most of it.

Between keeping their secret from friends and trying to figure out what really happened that first crazy night in Vegas, passions ignite. If they can hold on to their fresh start, maybe the Vegas motto doesn't have to hold true: What happens in Vegas doesn't have to stay there.

Hunter Dane and Camden Snow have settled into a satisfying routine of solving murders and hanging at the club, when they aren't expressing their affection for one another. Vigorously. A great life in an idyllic location. Until a skinny kid who barely came up to Cam's chin sought out Detective Lieutenant Dane...

"I saw my father last night," Asher Gamble told him. "He said Jason Furney's going to die and people will say I did it."

Hunt frowned. The boy's name seemed familiar. "Tell me the rest of it."

Asher locked his gaze on Hunt's as intractably as Cam ever had.

"My father killed my mother and my brother when I was two years old. He died in prison four years ago."

So much for routine.

A 60k word police procedural. The third Hunter Dane Investigation and the 5th book in the Hunt&Cam4Ever mm bdsm series. For adult lovers of suspense and apple pie for breakfast.

Review

“But I want you. I never wanted anyone before, not some specific person. I don’t do halfway any more than you do. I want you to let go. To trust me.” – Hunt

It’s hard to believe less than a year has passed since I first encountered Hunter Dane and Camden Snow. Over the course of twelve months and five books these two men have firmly established themselves as unforgettable, glorious, and favourite characters. Hunt and Cam have become real for me, I truly feel I know them, and can’t quite make myself believe that it is actually impossible to ever meet them face to face.

Like Matchstick Men and Dancing Men this book is a mystery novel as well as the continuation of Hunt and Cam’s relationship. In this review I’ll talk about these two aspects of the story separately, if only because I would like my review to make sense.

The mystery is intricate and well plotted and just a wee bit otherworldly. From the previous books we know that Hunter’s skills as an investigator are as much due to his intuitive powers, and his willingness to trust those, as to his focused approach to each case. Psychic Men takes that intuition one step further, into the realm of spirituality. While the case is solved and closed as a result of accepted investigative procedures, the lead up, aftermath, and even the motive are all deeply rooted in less earth-bound ideas. (I realise I’m being somewhat vague here, but that’s on purpose; I wouldn’t want to spoil the story or the mystery for anyone.) I want to say the otherworldly stayed well within the believable spectrum in this story. But then, I am a firm believer in intuition and premonition.

Also as in the previous books, both the crime and the players initially remain somewhat vague and disguised. The past creeps into the future and nothing and nobody is quite what it seems. But exactly what is going on and how it relates to the glimpses of the past we’re shown, is only revealed slowly, making the reader wonder, guess and second guess before being turned around again. Which of course serves to make this book unputdownable as soon you get stuck into it. And that is without mentioning the one or two truly heart stopping and danger-filled scenes.

Now for our two heroes. Hunt and Cam are hot (do I hear a loud ‘Duh’?). In fact, they are at least as hot in this story as they were in the previous books and, what’s more, they continue to explore new avenues. Just when you think you know exactly how the dynamic between them works, they switch it up. The scenes where Hunt gets to control Cam for twelve hours and ‘tortures’ him with tenderness were delicious. And Hunt’s contrasting feelings when it comes to his submission to Cam will never lose their magic or fail to mesmerize me.

The gleam in Cam’s eyes promised Hunter a reprisal he looked forward to fearing and desiring and suffering and savouring.”

In On His knees Cam told Hunt the following:

“There are no limits. You have no safeword. You do nothing I do not order. I don’t stop until I’m done.
“You have one chance to walk away. Once I restrain you, nothing and no one can or will rescue you. I’m all there is.”

It isn’t until this book that both Hunt and the reader get to understand the full meaning of those words. In On His Knees those words were a warning, giving Hunt the opportunity to reconsider submitting to Cam. This time they’re an ultimatum; Cam will no longer accept anything less than all Hunt has to give; anytime, anywhere. Cam has a destination in mind for himself and the sub he loves, even if he knows the road to getting there will be strenuous.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Hunt and Cam have taken me hostage. They’ve wormed their way into my consciousness and I absorb their stories rather than read them. Anybody who enjoys the darker side of BDSM, loves observing two strong men establish a relationship that is uniquely theirs, and thrives on well researched and immaculately plotted mysteries, will find a piece of heaven in the Hunt&Cam4Ever series.

“But building a relationship that didn’t revolve about this constant power struggle, would take all his strength and determination, as well as Hunter’s.

My previous Hunt&Cam4Ever reviews:
