Excerpt

Chapter 1

Rob Brady knew three things. His sister was dead, he was the guardian to her two boys, and he was stuck in Hell.

And why am I fixating on Hell?

Oh yeah, the room, the kids, the crushing grief of absolutely fucking everything.

If Hell was a small, airless room with no windows, a flickering light, and two utterly silent children staring at him as if he’d personally murdered their mother.

Oh, and a thin-lipped woman from Child Protection Services looking at him the same way.

Of course, he hadn't killed his sister because he only ever took out the bad guys. With ruthless efficiency, he’d carved out the poison in the US and kept its citizens safe. Most people would’ve described him as an assassin, but he was more than that; the last resort when normal lines of defense failed.

At least, he used to be until he caught a bullet things went pear-shaped.

“How long have they been on their own?” Rob Brady didn’t know what else to ask. He wanted to be angry with the DCFS but how could he be? Instead, he wavered between anger and guilt, and it was guilt that was winning.

“Mr. Brady, they were never on their own.”

“My sister—” He stopped talking when he realized he was just about to state how long ago his sister died when her children were sitting right there in the room. Lowering his tone, he then turned to Sylvia from the DCFS, efficient and steady, and just ever so slightly pissed at him. “A year. They’ve been on their own a year.”

Sylvia inhaled sharply and clutched her folders to her chest.

“And for a little less than that, we have tried to track down their uncle and been unable to find anything.”

“I know. I get that.” Anyone trying to find him would reach several dead-ends whichever way they went. First of all the navy and his time in the SEALs, then when he joined the team combatting mainland terrorism. At every turn, his existence was classified, and in the end, he'd become nothing more than a ghost. “That isn't my point.”

Sylvia tapped a finger on the files in a steady rhythm. “Then please, can you enlighten me as to what exactly is your point?”

He opened the door and gestured for her to go into the hallway, following her out and shutting it behind them. He had questions and didn’t want to ask them in front of his nephews.

“Why has no one adopted them? Why don’t they have a forever home with a new family?”

“Because your sister’s intention was that you would take the boys. It’s explicitly stated in every legal form we have, and it was her dying wish.”

“But she couldn’t have known I would ever come back. Or that I was even alive…” He floundered for something to say. He’d come back to town on the off chance he’d see what was left of his extended family from a distance, and instead, he’d learned his sister was dead, after losing a battle with cancer, that there was no father in the picture, and that his nephews were in the system.

“Nonetheless, they are legally your responsibility. Given you worked so hard to get authorization from Governor Chilton, something I’ve never seen before, along with psych evals that no normal person would have access to, you are now in a position to leave with your nephews.”

The minute he’d heard about the boys, he'd realized he needed to get things done. He’d called in favors, had people who owed him create a backstory so tight he seemed like Mother fucking Teresa, and now he was here. His nephews needed a home, and he thought on his feet because he only had another three good months to put anything in place for them. He wanted them looked after, safe, and so he had one more mission before leaving. He’d have to delay spending his last weeks on a beach in Aruba, sipping cocktails and sleeping with anything that moved.

“I can take them today?” he asked. A small, hesitant part of him wanted her to say no, that there were more details to be ironed out.

“Yes.”

“Now?”

“Yes.” She pursed her lips as if it were against her better judgment. But he'd passed all the checks, and the references were sound, he had the governor's endorsement. It was done.

“Okay then.”

He pushed back into the room. Bran, the older of his two nephews, stared at him steadily. Toby, the youngest, sniffled and gripped his brother hard. Any ordinary uncle would’ve hugged them close and told them everything was going to be okay. But he wasn't a regular uncle, and he swore Bran knew that because there was accusation in his eyes.

You don’t even know us; he seemed to be saying.

Was it right for Rob to be taking them from their new foster home? They’d been placed with a family currently fostering six kids, and on the surface, everything seemed okay. He’d done his due diligence, and the parents checked out, but there was a weird vibe in the house, a rule of fear, and he didn’t like it.

He’d stayed alive this long by listening to his instinct, and his gut told him he should take Bran and Toby, that he was the boys’ kin. He also knew where he could find them a better home. In the mountains, with rivers and horses, and a whole group of people who would look out for them.

“Everything will be okay.” Was he reassuring himself or the boys?

If anyone who knew him had seen he was being handed two children to take care of, they'd call the cops.

Of course, he could handle the cops. He’d done it before, but the kids would slow him down. Unless he strapped them to his back and—

“Mr. Brady?”

Sylvia talked to him, or at him, and from her expression, she wasn't impressed he'd stopped listening.

“Sorry, say again?” He glanced at Toby who was sniffling harder and snuggling deeper into his brother. I should go to Toby and…

And what?

Do what? Say what? Scare the kid rigid by being all up in his face?

“We need an address for our records. Unless you reside with Governor Chilton?” The last she added sarcastically.

Oh yeah, a house, an address, he probably needed those. He’d managed to fool them with his credentials so far, and the recommendation he'd gotten from the governor for a favor owed had cut through the red tape. The address was easy; it was the only place he had on his to-do list, the one where the kids could maybe have a home. He just needed to hire a lawyer, update his will, get Justin to agree to his proposal, and he'd be able to leave without any worries.

“Crooked Tree Ranch, outside of Helena, Montana.”

Review

“So, let’s not fuck about here. Do you switch?”

What do you get when you put two alpha males together?

Fireworks.

But what is the result if one of said alphas isn’t planning on staying? What if one of them has secrets so shattering they may spell the end of something before it has even started?

Under those circumstances you still get fireworks, but they are only one of several breathtaking and heart-stopping elements.

I do not want to give too many details about this story or about what’s going on with Rob, but I have to admit that I feared this story would be a lot darker and angstier than it actually turned out to be.

You know what they say: ‘be careful what you wish for’ and boy does Rob discover the truth in that statement. What starts out as his quest to find a family for his two orphaned young nephews, soon turns into something completely different when Rob discovers that despite everything he’s faced with, despite his best laid plans, and despite his conviction that he’s no use to anybody, he can’t escape the pull of love and belonging any more than his young charges can. It may happen against his will and despite him fighting the process every step of the way, but Rob is helpless against the reluctant trust granted him by two young boys, the extended family he encounters at Crooked Tree Ranch and, most of all, against Aaron and his persistence.

To say Rob’s predicament touched me deeply would be a gross understatement. I’m all too familiar with the feeling that the rest of the world, or at least those I care about and for, would be better off without me. And while there were moments when I wanted to shout at him to never give up, I couldn’t blame him for not seeing that glimmer of possible light at the end of the tunnel for the longest time.

Yes, this is a story about Rob and the demons he needs to slay. A story about Aaron and his persistent patience and refusal to take no for an answer. A story about lust leading to love leading to….

But most of all this, and the rest of the series, have given us a story about families and their power to mend the seemingly unfixable. While there are certainly dark moments filled with anguish, more than anything these stories about finding light after darkness and hope in the midst of despair.

While we do get glimpses of the characters featured in the previous titles, they only appear in so far as they have a real role to play in Rob and Aaron’s story. Thankfully, we do see enough to know that all is well for those who found their home and (extended) family at Crooked Tree Range. All of which makes Second Chance Ranch an inspired conclusion to what has been a wonderful series.

Snow In Montana (Montana #4) by RJ Scott

Blurb

An actor in the closet, a sheriff in love, and memories that won't stay hidden.

Jordan Darby is known as the King of Christmas. The star of eight made-for-TV Christmas movies, the leading man who always gets his girl. Filming at Crooked Tree Ranch in Montana, in the ice and snow, Jordan is fighting to make a go of his new company and dealing with fears of exposure over one huge secret. After all, who the hell would buy into him being a romantic straight lead if rumors about him being gay were proven to be true.

Sheriff Ryan Carter is advising on the new movie being made at Crooked Tree. He hoped this would be one day of work and nothing more. Until, that is, he meets the hero. But while Jordan is sexy, he's also very much stuck in the closet - everything that Ryan doesn't need in his life. And then lust becomes part of the equation, and Ryan's quiet life is thrown into turmoil.

Their story unfolds against the chaos that overtakes the ranch, with Adam regaining memories that terrify him and make him look at Justin differently, and Justin leaving the ranch to make things right. Only through trusting in love and friendship can Justin and Adam learn to look to the future instead of letting the past destroy everything. But will they ever see clearly enough to do that?

My Review

To say I was looking forward to Snow in Montana would be a gross understatement. Apart from the more than enticing blurb for Ryan and Jordan’s story there was still the Justin and Adam situation to fully resolve. For the most part this book gave me exactly what I was hoping for but….

I have to admit I’m a bit torn about this book. On the one hand I loved it. Ryan and Justin’s story was adorable, almost angst free, and a pure delight to read. It makes a nice change to read a book where one partner isn’t more or less forcing the other to step out of the closet and it’s even better when the outing, when it does happen, is more or less drama free and helping the relationship move forward rather than setting it back. I always love it when a book takes me by surprise or a story develops in a way I didn’t expect and that was definitely the case when it came to Jordan and Ryan. These two men were so cute together. I loved the doubts Ryan harboured underneath all his strength and the determination and honesty of Jordan.

I could have done with fewer characters whose names started with ‘J’.  Jordan, Justin, Jason…more than once I confused one for the other. I get that in a series with as many characters as the Montana books it is impossible to not have characters with similar sounding names but when all three showed up in same chapter my addled mind had a hard time keeping up.

I’m also not entirely sure how I feel about the resolution of the Adam – Justin situation. On the one hand it makes perfect sense that their situation doesn’t suddenly find an easy answer or clean cut solution. On the other hand however it didn’t feel as if any more questions had been answered when the book ended, just that Adam had come to terms with the fact that the past would always remain somewhat murky. And while that certainly fitted the situation and felt realistic, I would have liked a bit more clarity.

However, all of the above didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book and reading it from start to finish more or less in one sitting. RJ Scott is a master storyteller with a special talent for creating characters who make a lasting impression. In these four books she created not only an extended family I came to adore but also managed to turn Montana into an extra character, as vivid as the people inhabiting it. Crooked Tree Range has over the course of these books turned into a place so real I’d love to go and spend a holiday there.

So while Snow in Montana wasn’t my favourite book in this quartet, it was, without a doubt, an intriguing and spellbinding finale and a pure pleasure to read.

Blurb

One burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he'd killed.

What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he's going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.

Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.

Review

This is, without a doubt, the darkest of the Montana books so far. If The Rancher’s Son was at times hard to read, this story made me want to read with my eyes closed at times. Justin broke my heart time and again. The hopelessness of his situation, and his determination to not endanger his family and friends, his certainty that he doesn’t deserve to be loved or that he’s incapable of feeling an emotion like love ever again; all of it made my heart ache because it was so very understandable. And yet, through all of Justin’s pain, while he’s fighting doubt and feelings of guilt and inadequacy, the one thing that keeps him grounded and stops him from falling apart altogether—or giving up and dying for that matter—is the presence of Sam. With Sam’s fingers in his hair, Justin can go on for another hour, another day.

So yes, this book made me feel all the feels, even if they were dark emotions for a large part of the book. They couldn’t be anything else. Nobody goes through what Justin has been forced to endure only to shrug it off again. So while I’m no good with angst and found it hard to live in Justin’s head at times, it all made perfect sense and I found myself grateful that the author had not given a miracle ‘love heals all’ sort of resolution to Justin.

In the two previous books we got to know Sam as a flirtatious and cheeky chap. This book shows there’s a lot more to the man. Underneath his lighthearted attitude hides a painful past he can’t completely shake. And that is probably the reason he is so good for Justin. Sam is not inclined to discuss his personal history with others and is willing, up to a point, to accept the same from Justin. When he does insist on answers it is because he thinks Justin needs to give them rather than a result of a personal need to know. All he knows is that he feels a connection to the man who was all but dead when he found him.

I’m not going to reveal exactly what Justin went through and had to do just to stay alive and keep himself from completely losing his mind. All of that should be revealed, as it is in this book, slowly and by Justin himself. Suffice to say that while there were moments when I wanted to shake him and tell him to just trust Sam and relax already, I spent most of my reading time wanting to wrap him up in my arms and keep him safe.

Overall this was an at times very hard to read, heartrending but ultimately fabulous and very satisfactory story that kept me on edge for longer than I’m usually comfortable with, only to lead me to the happy but not too perfect ending it needed. I can’t wait to read book four and spend more time with all of the Montana gang.

The Rancher's Son (Montana #2) - RJ Scott

Author: RJ Scott

Cover Design: Meredith Russell

Length: 66,200 words

Series

Blurb:

A man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.

When he wakes up in hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can't remember anything to help... except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words, and they're not much, but it's a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.

Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother's best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan's desk that may give new leads he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn't his brother, but it's someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.

What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any kind of future they may think they have together.

My Thoughts:

I adored this book. If there is such a thing as the perfect combination of angst and relief, The Ranger’s Son had it for me. There’s so much hurt in this story. There’s Ethan who’s been searching for his Justin, his younger brother, and Adam for twelve years, refusing to believe they’re dead despite never finding a trace of them or a clue as to what might have happened all that time ago. The emotional rollercoaster he embarks on when he finds Adam, the man he professed his love to as a seventeen year old, is stunning. The joy of finding Adam and the frustration and fear when he discovers Adam has lost his memories and can’t provide him with any answers about his brother are in stark contrast to each other.

Adam—sigh. My heart bled for him from the moment he was introduced. He is such a wonderful combination of fragile and determined he took my breath away. I loved being able to follow his journey, even if it was heartbreaking at times.

I was delighted to visit Crooked Tree Ranch again and have an opportunity to catch up with all the characters I’d fallen for in the first book. But the best part of this book for me was watching Ethan and Adam finding each other again, to see their love for each other still pulling them together, despite twelve years and despite lost memories.

This is a quiet sorta romance. The tension isn’t found in a ‘will they – won’t they’ scenario but in the unraveling of what happened in the past and what, if any, dangers it poses for the present and future. I adored Adam and Ethan, I adored their story and I adored the way it was told. It doesn’t get much better than that. To say I’m ready for the next book, A Cowboy’s Home, would be a gross understatement.

On a final note; I’ve got a feeling this may well be one of the most quoted sentences in the genre, and rightly so. It put a huge smile to my face.

“You mean I’m healing you with my magic penis” - Ethan

But, if I’m going to share that quote, I’ve got to include the following sentence as well; you can’t have one without the other.

“Who needs romance when they have access to a magic penis.” - Adam
