Changing Lines (Harrisburg Railers #1) by RJ Scott & V.L Locey

Length: 57,000 words approx

Cover Design: Meredith Russell

Blurb

Can Tennant show Jared that age is just a number, and that love is all that matters?

The Rowe Brothers are famous hockey hotshots, but as the youngest of the trio, Tennant has always had to play against his brothers’ reputations. To get out of their shadows, and against their advice, he accepts a trade to the Harrisburg Railers, where he runs into Jared Madsen. Mads is an old family friend and his brother’s one-time teammate. Mads is Tennant’s new coach. And Mads is the sexiest thing he’s ever laid eyes on.

Jared Madsen’s hockey career was cut short by a fault in his heart, but coaching keeps him close to the game. When Ten is traded to the team, his carefully organized world is thrown into chaos. Nine years younger and his best friend’s brother, he knows Ten is strictly off-limits, but as soon as he sees Ten’s moves, on and off the ice, he knows his heart could get him into trouble again.

Review

Before I get into the review proper, I have to be honest and admit that I’m not into ice hockey and know little to nothing about it. While the book is by no means filled with endless amounts of hockey detail, even the bits that were there went straight over my head. They didn’t bore me as such, nor did they pull me out of the story, but I doubt that I would have missed them if they hadn’t been there. But, that’s on me. I guess you’ll have to look at other reviews if you want to know more about how well the authors dealt with that aspect of the story. I’ll limit myself to things I’m more familiar with, such as the romance.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Tennant and Jared fall victim to a case of insta-love, but there is a clear instance of insta-attraction for both of them as soon as they lay eyes on each other for the first time in years. Of course, nothing is ever as simple as that. Professional sportsmen aren’t supposed to be gay. And, if they are, they’re expected to keep the fact well hidden. Coming out just isn’t an option if you want to succeed in that particular world. Which means Tennant faces a dilemma. He can’t deny is attraction to Jared and he’s sick and tired of hiding who he really is not just from the world at large but also from his family. All of this means that once his secret starts to unravel he can’t quite see it as a bad thing. Sure, coming out is scary and the possible consequences could be devastating but Tennant is ready to face them head on.

The situation for Jared is somewhat easier. He’s a trainer and no longer finds himself in the limelight a professional hockey player can’t escape. Besides the fact that he’s bi rather than gay seems to make his situation more acceptable in some weird way. His issues stem from different sources. While he is definitely attracted to Tennant, he’s all too aware that he’s older than him. Add to that the fact that he’s been a family friend of the Rowe family for a long time, and he has enough reasons to fight the pull towards Tennant he experiences.

But, when the two men do give in to the attraction between them it is almost immediately clear they’re playing for keeps, which means that they have to deal with potentially bad reactions from Tennant’s family, the management of the Harrisburg Railers, not to mention the world at large.

This was a sweet romance, especially since any of the minimal angst in the story wasn’t caused by conflicts between Tennant and Jared but rather by the tension their having to come out created. I refuse to give away how all of that plays out, but will mention that I was very, very happy with the direction of the story. The story made me smile quite often. The banter between our two protagonists was wonderful. I loved all the Pokemon references and was charmed by both the Russian goalie and Jared’s son.

Overall this was a charming and comfy read. And despite the fact that it hasn’t triggered any interest in hockey in me, I’m still eager to read the next book in this series. J

Mascara & Bandages (Mary’s Boys #3) by Brandon Witt - A Release Day Review

121 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Blurb

Ariel Merman is a new drag queen who’s already finding a family at Hamburger Mary’s. After a performance as Ariel, Zachary Cooper walks home in his makeup and is assaulted by homophobes. Zachary’s worry that the attack has thrown a wrench in his good fortune is eased when he looks into the eyes of his doctor.

Dr. Teegan Chau is a little lost after divorcing his wife and coming out of the closet, but he can’t deny the pull he feels toward the young man he patches up. Luckily, Zachary takes the initiative and asks Teegan out. But attraction is the easy part of their blossoming relationship—as they deal with an ex-wife and child, being a drag queen in a heteronormative culture, Zachary’s lingering trauma from his attack, and Teegan acclimating to life as part of an out-and-proud gay couple.

The challenges seem daunting at the start of a romance. Can Zachary and Teegan make it through the rough patches and take a chance on the love that’s been missing from both their lives?

Review

Mascara & Bandages is the third book in Brandon Witt’s Mary’s Boys series and a very welcome addition to what is quickly becoming a favourite collection for me. With every book in this series I’m falling more in love with Hamburger Mary’s. The sense of family between the people who own, work in, and frequent the place makes my heart sing. The place is slowly turning into a microcosm of my ideal world; Hamburger Mary’s reality in these books (and maybe also in real life?) is what the rest humanity should be striving for. Togetherness, unconditional love and support, and a non-judgmental environment shouldn’t be too much to ask for. It should be the norm.

Okay, that’s enough about my personal world view. Let’s get back to Zachary and Teegan’s story.

I should start with a warning. The story starts with a shocking and heartbreaking act of violence which was hard to read for me and may be a trigger for others. It was one of those scenes I wanted to be able to read with my eyes closed, if you know what I mean. My heart broke for poor Zachary, but the healing started almost immediate. Doctor Teegan Chau is exactly who and what Zachary needs in order to heal both physically and mentally.

Teegan isn’t without a few issues of his own. He was late coming out of the closet, trying for as long as he possibly could to live up to his traditional parent’s expectations. Now out and divorced, he hasn’t actually dated a man before. Zachary entering his life, even if it is under the worst of circumstances, is what he needs to take the next step, even as he knows that it may lead to a further estrangement between him and his parents.

I loved that this story didn’t have one ‘strong’ guy being there to support and help the ‘weaker/damaged’ guy to realise his worth and deal with the world. Zachary and Teegan both fear that who they are and/or what they do may make them less in the eyes of other gay men. Here we have two men with doubts about themselves who help each other to the realisation that they are good enough, man enough, and loveable enough. These two men are each other’s equal from start to finish, and together they grow stronger, gain confidence. I enjoyed every single step of their journey and, if you’d listened carefully, you could have heard me cheering from the sidelines.

There were so many deeply touching scenes in this story. The one that really got to me was the moment Teegan shaves Zachary’s face. So much care. Such tenderness and deep trust. It took my breath away. I loved that Brandon Witt avoided all the obvious opportunities to introduce (more) angst into the story. Sure both men had their doubts and second thoughts, but both were also brave enough to keep on moving forward, trusting each other and their developing feelings to see them through and keep them safe.

Ariel Merman is a stunning creation. I fell in love with her from the very first moment. I adored how she was Zachary and yet so much more. Ariel gave Zachary the courage and focus to live fully despite any doubts and fears. And honestly, what's not to love about a merman based on the Little Mermaid story?

As in the previous books, the side characters were stars in their own right. I’ve mentioned above how I feel about the Hamburger Mary cast and I’ll refrain from waxing lyrical again. In this book we also meet Kelly, Teegan’s ex-wife who is his staunchest supporter and a wonderful antidote to his cold parents.

All in all this was, once again, a wonderful, uplifting and delightful reading experience. I’ve only just finished reading Mascara & Bandages and already find myself eagerly awaiting my next journey into this wonderful world. Is it time for Deeds & Confetti yet? And should I ever make it to Denver, I know exactly which establishment will be at the top of my lists of places to visit.

Mona Lisa St. James made a deathbed promise that she would do anything to save her mother's art gallery. Unfortunately, not only is The Red painted red, but it's in the red. She soon realizes she has no choice but to sell it.

Just as she realizes she has no choice but to sell it, a mysterious man comes in after closing time and makes her an offer: He will save The Red if she agrees to submit to him for the period of one year.

The man is handsome, English, and terribly tempting...but surely her mother didn't mean for Mona to sell herself to a stranger. Then again, she did promise to do anything to save The Red...

The Red is a standalone novel of erotic fantasy from Tiffany Reisz, international bestselling author of The Bourbon Thief and the Original Sinners series.

Review

When I pick up a book by Tiffany Reisz I know to expect the unexpected. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that she will take me places I’ve never been before and make me enjoy and marvel at storylines that should probably shock if not horrify me. All of that was reinforced while I read The Red. In fact it is probably safe to say Mrs Reisz surpassed herself with this story when it comes to making shocking and graphic scenes not only tantalisingly hot but also borderline normal.

Mona knows she will do anything to keep the promise she made to her mother on her deathbed. She won’t stop at anything when it comes to keeping The Red, the art gallery she’s inherited from her mother, open. So, when a mysterious man named Malcolm offers to provide her with the money she needs to avoid bankruptcy in return for her willing submission over the course of a year, she barely hesitates before agreeing.

I won’t go into any details about what follows, if only because it might lead to the review not being accepted on certain sites. What I will say is that Malcolm takes images from famous paintings and re-enacts them, stretching Mona’s body and boundaries with every subsequent encounter.

“By the end of her beating, she couldn’t tell the crop apart from his kindness. They were one and the same to her so that every strike of the crop was as tender as a kiss and every word of tenderness made her crave the crop.”

It isn’t long before the boundaries blur. While Mona tries to convince herself that she only puts up with Malcolm and his kinky scenarios, which are too vivid to be mere dreams, for the money he’s promised, it soon becomes clear that she’s becoming addicted to Malcolm and the exquisite torture he introduces her to.

“She could either see Malcolm or she could see reason, and Malcolm was a finer sight than anything as dull as reason.”

Which leads me to the warning I feel I should issue. This book is not for the easily shocked or offended. When I say that Malcolm pushes virtually every single (sexual) limit a person could have, I’m not joking. Many things which you might feel are or should be taboo are exactly the experiences that tie Mona ever closer to Malcolm. Her journey is shocking, beautiful and mesmerising.

I have to be honest here and admit that for the longest time I thought I wasn’t going to adore The Red. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, was mesmerised by it in fact, but had this nagging feeling that it was missing that something special that had made me love the Original Sinners stories so much. And I can’t deny that I never connected to Mona or Malcolm in quite the same way as I did to Nora & co in that earlier series.

But, I should have known better than to even consider for one minute that The Red lacked substance or originality. This is, after all, a story by Tiffany Reisz. And she is in a league of her own when it comes to pulling threads together. Few authors can match her when it comes to taking you by surprise long after you think you’ve got it all figured out. Just when I was absolutely sure the story I had almost finished was a rather exquisite version of ‘Mona in Carnal Wonderland’; an intriguing, deviant and endlessly erotic fantasy with little rhyme or reason to the underlying story, it suddenly all made sense without the final reveal diminishing the dreamlike quality to the story. And what’s more, I loved that the ending implies that the journey Mona had undertaken with Malcolm was only the start of our heroine’s life as a perfect whore.

So while it remains true that the Original Sinners books will more than likely forever be my favourites, I can’t deny that I did thoroughly enjoy this paranormal, very erotic, and addictive fantasy.

“And the devil had smirked, not smiled, because the devil does not smile.”

Can a touch of Satin bring a straight copper to his knees?

Detective Joel Hunter is on surveillance when he first lays eyes on Satin, the singer with the amazing voice, which is as beautiful as she is. But when the stake-out comes to an end, he can’t resist going back to the bar. He gets a shock when he learns what lies beneath the satin dress, but an even bigger one when he realizes he’s attracted to the owner of that sultry voice - Ross Dauntry.

Ross can’t figure out why the cop keeps coming back, even after he’s learned the truth. Is Joel attracted to him, or to Satin? Because the answer is important, and one way or another, Ross needs to know…

46,000 words. A standalone novella of satin and sensuality...

Although this story is in the same series as Lace, you will not find Dave and Shawn in these pages - Joel and Ross provide enough heat of their own.

Review

Before I get into my review proper of this charming, delightful, and sexy story I want to say that while Satin may be the second book in a series, there is no reason why you couldn’t read it as a stand-alone. That’s not to say that I don’t urge you to read Lace too, but you can do on either side of reading Satin.

The problem with giving five stars to a book is that officially you can’t go any higher. And I have to admit that no matter how much I adored Lace, I loved Satin even more. I felt closer to the main characters in this book, I got a bit more drawn into their dilemmas. In fact, and I might as well be honest about it, I fell a little bit in love with both Joel and Ross while reading Satin.

I loved that the big issue in this story wasn’t Joel’s bisexuality. It may take him a short while to get his head around the fact that for the first time ever he wants to act on the attraction for another man he feels, he doesn’t obsess about it or try to deny it. No, the angst in this story is the result of both men’s past experiences with (failed) relationships. Ross doesn’t trust Joel’s reasons for being attracted to him and, after that issue has been result doesn’t believe he will stick around. Joel, on the other hand, has a hard time believing that it is possible to fall hard, fast, and deeply for someone he’s only known for a few weeks. It takes these two men a while before they get their acts together and talk and listen to each other for long enough to realise that they’re actually on the same page. But their journey towards that point is intriguing, at times very hot, and both humorous and angsty in just the right proportion.

As I’ve come to expect from this author the secondary characters were a refreshing, necessary and delightful addition to the story. Just as it wasn’t a surprise that the writing smoothly pulled me along, or that the story captivated me. By this stage I’m pretty sure in the knowledge that when I pick up a book by K.C. Wells I’m about to start a story I will lose myself in. Satin once again confirmed all those qualities.

Great things come in small packages…

Ben Lethbridge doesn’t have many vices left. He lost his youth to raising his little sister to adulthood, then made up for lost time with reckless abandon. Two years of constant partying—and ignoring his diabetes—has left him tied to a home dialysis regimen.

He can work from home, fortunately, but most of life’s little luxuries are forbidden. Except for watching porn… and fantasising over Ollie, the gorgeous 51000purple-haired skateboarder who delivers his discreetly packaged DVDs.

Their doorstep banter is the highlight of Ben’s solitary day, but his paranoia over his illness-ravaged body prevents him from seeing their flirting for what it really is. He knows Ollie is far too young for him anyway, but he figures there’s no harm in sprucing himself up a bit.

Then one day, a package accidentally splits open, revealing Ben’s dirty little secret. But instead of Ollie being repelled they make an unexpected connection that has Ben wondering if he’s been reading the situation wrong all this time. The only way to find out if they have a chance at love is to risk showing Ollie every last scar. And that could take more courage than Ben owns.

Warning: Contains superhero porn comics and a pint-sized, accident-prone delivery guy with colour-changing hair. Readers may experience coffee cravings, an unexpected liking for bad mullets, and the urge to wrap Ollie up and take him home.

Review

Handle with Care is a charming and mostly easy flowing romance in which the two main characters act exactly as you would expect them to behave, staying true to character throughout the story. And yes, that’s a compliment.

I can’t begin to explain what a refreshing delight it was to read a book in which the younger protagonist (Ollie) who is only twenty and has recently escaped an abusive relationship with an older man, is portrayed as insecure, scared, and prone to running away when things get too much. I can just about remember being that age, and I know that at the time it was often easier to turn my back on a situation or person than to try and put all my thoughts and feelings into words.

Ben made just as much sense as a character. Of course he was grumpy; he was first desperately sick and later recuperating after a massive operation. Those things tend to make a person think dark thoughts and withdraw. Of course he felt guilty about the things he’d done in his past, and of course he had a hard time believing someone as young and full of life as Ollie could really be interested in him.

The beauty in this story lies in the fact that despite all these issues, Ollie and Ben manage to find a convincing way towards each other. It’s not a journey without roadblocks or hiccups, but neither man is ever able or willing to give up on the other.

The secondary characters made as much sense to me. These were all real people in this story. The sort of people who could be your neighbour (preferably without the gnomes, thank you very much). They’re nothing special and that makes them all the more wonderful. If there’s one thing Josephine Myles does very well it is creating and presenting believable, fallible, quirky, and charming characters who invariably find their way into my heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed Handle with Care, and not only because the author handled her characters with great care. The writing is smooth and flows effortlessly, the world in which the story takes place is vibrant and the story intriguing. Really, there isn’t a whole lot more you can ask for in a story.

Gideon McCade—weighed down by memories of his previous life as a Navy SEAL and a CIA agent—has blood on his hands. He turns to his BDSM club, Catharsis, and Dominating submissives to get him through the daily grind of civilian life. Knowing his past is too much to inflict on a life partner, he keeps his connections brief and superficial. When his former life comes back to haunt him, his desire for revenge pulls him back into the shadows, darkening his hopes for a future in the light.

Temporarily sidelining his career as a tattoo artist, Sebastian Phillips works as a composite artist for the local police department. To alleviate the inescapable burden of a congenital medical condition, he immerses himself in his art and seeks the catharsis of submission. But with life weighing heavily on his shoulders and darkness encroaching, he yearns for a contract with a Dominant that sees past the protective barriers he’s erected to the vulnerable submissive within.

When happenstance brings Gideon and Sebastian together, their connection is undeniable. The knowledge that they are both too damaged to form permanent bonds of love causes them to rely on an impersonal contract to fulfil their physical needs. But staying emotionally detached becomes impossible, and breaking their contract seems the only option. Will Gideon’s need for vengeance and Sebastian’s declining health destroy what’s grown between them, or will they help each other find their way back into the light?

Excerpt

He continued to give the kittens attention but kept his eyes on Sebastian. “You wearing a plug, boy?”

The blush pushed even more of his buttons and he smiled as his boy nodded and said, “Yes, Sir.”

Gideon, still squatting with the kittens, rested his elbows on his knees as he gazed up at his boy, grinning. “You look good enough to eat.”

Sebastian’s blush deepened and he turned his face away, avoiding eye contact. Gideon watched as an emotional wall came up, insulating his sub from any unwanted compliments he didn’t believe were genuine. He’d have to work on that.

“Speaking of eating. Have you had dinner?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Good. Come on into the kitchen, I’m gonna grab a beer and you can look through what I’ve got to see if you want anything.”

Sebastian followed him quietly and when Gideon pulled a beer from his fridge, he left it open for Sebastian to look through. He saw a spark of interest and then a sideways glance at Gideon before he shrugged and said, “I’ll just take water.”

“Nope.”

That brought Sebastian’s focus directly on him. His eyebrows reaching toward his hairline. “Pardon?”

Gideon grinned at his boy’s proper response and used the neck of his beer bottle to point at the fridge. “You saw something that interested you in there. Go ahead.”

A blush crept up the boy’s neck to his cheeks and Gideon smiled wider, wondering what on earth could garner that much embarrassment from his refrigerator. He frowned when Sebastian insisted that water was what he wanted. That wouldn’t do at all.

Setting his beer down he lifted Sebastian up and sat him on the countertop, and watched as the boy wiggled to get his plug-ladened ass comfortable. He smiled and wedged himself between the boy’s legs. Watching his eyes dilate when he wrapped both of his legs around his waist like he’d done the night before sent a little thrill through Gideon. He loved how Sebastian responded to him.

He leaned in and trailed soft kisses up Sebastian’s neck, smiling when he felt his whole body shiver. Kissing his way to his ear he whispered, “What’s got you blushing in my fridge? Hmm?”

Before Sebastian could respond Gideon kissed his lips and pulled back. “We’re not gonna move from this spot until you tell me. I’m a very patient man, Sebastian.”

Sebastian huffed, blushing again. “You’ll laugh.”

Gideon laughed. Guilty as charged. And reveled in the fact that Sebastian felt comfortable enough to shove him away playfully.

“See? I told you, you’d laugh!”

“You haven’t even told me what you want yet!”

“Well, I’m not gonna tell you now!”

Gideon snuck back in between the boy’s legs and tested a theory from a response he’d gotten the night before, digging his thumb lightly into Sebastian’s ribs. When the boy squeaked, and tried to shove him away again, he dug his fingers into Sebastian’s other side until he was squirming and trying desperately to get away from those tickling digits.

“CHOCOLATE MILK!”

Gideon stopped his torture in complete surprise. A laugh escaping before he could stop it. “What?”

Sebastian’s mouth dropped open at his audacity. “See?! You laughed!”

Gideon gripped the edge of the counter, leaning into Sebastian, the top of his head resting on Sebastian’s shoulder, hiding his face as he kept laughing. “I’m not! Really. I’m not.”

Sebastian gasped and tried to shove him away. “You so are!”

He shook his head and cleared his throat, finding himself completely surprised, pleasantly so, that he was having so much fun. When was the last time he’d had fun like that? His expression serious, he gazed into Sebastian’s eyes, his own twinkling with mirth. “I’m not. I promise. This is serious. Chocolate milk is serious business. Hang on.”

He went about getting out a long ice cream spoon and the largest glass he could find. He filled it with milk and got the chocolate syrup out of the door of his fridge and proceeded to brandish it high above the milk glass, squeezing a ridiculous amount of chocolate into the glass with a flourish.

Setting the syrup down, he held up the spoon to be examined by Sebastian, who was now crossing his arms over his chest, eyes narrowed, doing his level best not to laugh. When he nodded, Gideon proceeded to take said spoon and stir in the chocolate, the milk changing color gradually until it was as dark as he could probably get it.

When Sebastian moved to pick it up, Gideon held up his finger and turned to a drawer. Back a second later, he was brandishing a plastic, bright blue, loopy straw with a penis as the tip and Sebastian lost the fight and finally let loose his laughter. When Gideon handed him the huge glass of chocolate milk he took it with greedy hands and started drinking from the penis with outrageously exaggerated enjoyment, making Gideon laugh again.

When he finally stopped drinking, the glass was half empty and Sebastian smacked his lips. “Ahh! Sooo good! Thank you, Sir.”

Completely charmed, and thoroughly enjoying himself, Gideon replied, “You’re welcome. I’ll keep it stocked for you.”

Sebastian tried his best to look stern. “See that you do.”

They grinned at each other a few more seconds and Gideon remembered the box of pastries his brother had given him earlier. He snagged them from the counter and opened them, watching as Sebastian’s eyes widened comically and he reached in the box, but then yanked his hand back out, looking up at Gideon. “May I, Sir?”

He smiled gently and nodded, loving hearing Sebastian call him Sir. “Please. That’s why I opened the box. Braden made them.”

They snacked on the sugary confections quietly for several minutes and Sebastian took another long drink from his glass and then looked at him seriously. “Um, Sir?”

Gideon smirked. “Yeah?”

Sebastian looked down at his drink and then back up again, grinning. “Don’t think I’m gonna let it slide that you have an electric blue, loopy penis straw in your kitchen.”

Gideon threw his head back and laughed. “Well, see. . . There was this party. . .”

“Uh huh, sure. I’ve heard it all before!”

“You’ve heard a story about an electric blue, loopy penis straw party favor before?”

“Who hasn’t?”

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and say, probably most people.”
