How to Wish Upon a Star by Eli Easton – Audio Book Review

Howl at the Moon #3
Narrator: Matthew Shaw
Audible Audio Book published by Pinkerton Roan

Blurb

Dr. Jason Kunik is working on the most earth-shattering genetics project ever, DNA mapping of a new species, the quickened—dogs who can shift into human form. The problem is, no one knows the quickened exist and Jason can’t betray them by publishing his studies. When he moves to Mad Creek to continue his research in a town full of quickened, all he wants is peace, quiet, and to be allowed to bury himself in his work. Perhaps if he figures how out the mutation is activated, he can silence his own inner dog forever.

Milo is a hospice comfort dog who has bonded with, and lost, many beloved patients in his life. He intuitively understands sickness and pain on a spiritual level most can’t see. When he gains the ability to become a man, he thinks he finally has everything he ever wanted. But being a man isn’t the same thing as being loved, and taking shelter in Mad Creek isn’t the same thing as finding a home.

When a mysterious illness hits Mad Creek and threatens all the quickened in town, it’s up to the scientist and the comfort dog to figure out what it is and how to stop it. Along the way they might discover that true love is possible—if you wish upon a star.

Review

How to Wish Upon a Star is the third book in the Howl at the Moon series and, as far as I’m concerned, the most suspenseful story so far. While there was danger from drug dealers in the first two books as well as the ever present risk of the existence of the Quickened being discovered, I didn’t find myself on the edge of my seat. In this book however, the risk is very direct and very personal, affecting characters I’ve come to know and care about, and I kept on wishing the narrator would read faster so that he could put me out of my misery and show me that all’s well that ends well indeed.

While in the first two books the romance centred around one full blood human and one Quickened, in this book both Jason and Milo are quickened, be it that Jason was born one and Milo only very recently discovered he could shift.

Jason as a bit of an enigma and it took me a while to warm to him. He has huge issues with who and what he is and has basically been denying his inner dog for years. As a result he suffers from anxiety and is more than a little abrupt and very stand-offish. He needs Milo’s innocence to get back in touch with his softer, canine side because you can only hide and deny a large part of yourself for so long before it will make its presence known, whether you want it to or not.

Milo, on the other hand, was such an endearing innocent he made my heart melt every time he opened his mouth or acted. Having said that, that same innocence also made me think that maybe Jason had a point when he thought that it was too early for Milo to be mating, that Milo needed more time to learn how to walk (pun intended) and live like a man before committing.

Part of the reason for my doubts about the compatibility of these two men was probably the result of the fact that we spend most of this story in Jason’s head which made it easy for me to see and understand all his doubt while for a long time, I had little or no idea what was going on in Milo’s head and heart. But, once we did get a glimpse at Milo’s motivation my reservations melted like snow under the sun and I found myself fully invested in the couple.

As I said, this story is far more tension filled than the previous two. The danger affects the whole town of Mad Creek and characters I’ve come to love were suddenly in real danger. It gave the story a heartstopping yet thrilling sense of urgency. On the other hand, there were also moments that made me snigger out loud, such as when Jason refers to what he has to do as a ‘Timmy in the well moment.’

The last chapter of this book made me think that there are other trials and tribulations ahead for Mad Creek and its residents. And that’s good news since I can’t see myself growing tired of these stories anytime soon — or ever for that matter. Because they’re faultlessly written. Because they give us memorable characters who make a powerful impression, and, more than anything, because she makes her (newly) quickened sound so much like dogs (or what I imagine dogs would sound like if they could speak), that it blows my mind. In Eli Easton dogs have found their mouth piece.

Will Marsden is a man on the run from his memories and his past. Steward of Denton Manor was a good position until Captain Dearne, the owner, lost the manor on the turn of a card. When the feckless Dearne is dumped unconscious and near death on his doorstep, Will grudgingly accepts an enormous sum of money to care for him.

Dearne regains consciousness but has no memories of how he came to be in the bed of a dark-haired, angry, but gorgeous man or how he came to be so badly injured.

When nightmares drive Dearne into Will’s arms every night, the attraction between them explodes. As Dearne battles with lost memories, he is forced to accept the fact that someone in his family wants him dead, and Will is forced to confront his past head on. Will the revelations uncovered tear them apart?

Excerpt

Will returned with a bag and pulled out the salve and some more linen. He quickly washed and dried his hands, and then busied himself with unwrapping him, eyes firmly fixed on his thigh, although his hands felt a little unsteady. Dearne adjusted his shirt when his cock twitched at his gentle touch. Any budding arousal was swiftly truncated though when Will pulled off the pad of gauze, sending red hot agony through his entire body and Dearne couldn’t stifle yet another high-pitched shriek.

“Sorry, sorry…” Will put his hand on Dearne’s arm and held on tight whilst he brought his breath under control. He hardly dared look at his leg.

“It’s not too bad,” Will said, so he peeled open one eye and squinted down. It was healing well. He presumed the pain was simply from dislodging the scabs. He breathed more evenly as Will dipped a cloth in the warm water that had been left in the rooms for them and bathed him. He relaxed fractionally.

“It is healing well,” Will said, drying him and then smoothing the salve over the wound. He replaced the old pad with a new one, then wound the makeshift bandage back around. “We could see if there is a physician in the town? Perhaps you should see someone who knows best how to deal with injuries.”

Dearne shook his head. “It is doing just fine. No need to involve anyone else in our escapade.”

Will smiled at that. “We have a couple of hours before we eat. Why don’t you sleep.” Dearne watched Will fold the old bandages and then wash his hands again. When he turned around and looked at him, lying on the bed with no breeches or smalls, he felt oddly exposed and for some reason, that excited him. Beneath his hand his cock hardened. He let himself relax against the pillow and watched Will’s jaw tighten and his eyes become fixed to his groin where he still cupped himself beneath his shirt. His whole body flushed as a surge of need tightened his skin. Will felt it too, judging by the bulge in his breeches.

“Will…” His voice was low, husky.

“Don’t.” Will closed his eyes and swallowed. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

Will opened his eyes, those beautiful dark eyes, and Dearne was shocked to see misery in them. “You know what I mean.”

Dearne looked pointedly at Will’s groin. “Why?”

“Because it’s wrong.”

“Wrong?”

“Yes, wrong. I can’t go through all that again. I can’t.” He turned away and picked up his bag. “I’ll see you for dinner.”

“Will?”

He paused momentarily by the door as if he would respond, but then yanked it open and left. Dearne flopped back on the bed and groaned.

* * * *

Will sat on the edge of his bed. His whole body trembled. He held his hands before him and watched them shake before jamming them under his armpits and rocking. His heart was pounding as though it might burst out of his chest and fierce longing made his entire body ache. He screwed his eyes closed and willed the need to go away, tried to think of sad things, horrid things, the pain, the shame, but all he could see was Dearne laid on the bed, hand on his cock. Those long, strong legs finely dusted with hair, that watchful smile that crept out at odd moments, and his eyes. Christ, his eyes. Ever since the morning they had woken and, half asleep, he had kissed Dearne’s shoulder, run his tongue over those freckles that sat like gold dust on his skin and he had begged him for more, all he could taste was Dearne’s mouth. All he could feel now was Dearne’s mouth. All he wanted was Dearne’s mouth.

He wrapped his arms around his middle and bent over until his head almost touched his knees and barely recognised the keening sound that came from his mouth as everything threatened to spiral out of control.

He didn’t hear the door open, he didn’t hear Dearne until he sat beside him and put an arm around his shoulders. And try as he might, he didn’t resist when Dearne pulled him into his arms. They sat, side by side, with Dearne holding him awkwardly, and Will pressing his head onto Dearne’s shoulder and gradually the trembling subsided.

“I don’t suppose you want to talk about it?” Dearne said.

“God, no.” Will shuddered.

“Thank Christ.”

Will glanced up and Dearne offered him a crooked smile.

Kai Brandt's more than eager to go camping with his best buddy, but his buddy's little brother Riley is all grown up now, and hotter than hell. Kai's willing to help him pitch more than just a tent… Which is weird, because Kai never swung that way before.

Events conspire to out Riley's secret AND leave him stranded in Kai's care for longer than they'd planned for. Trapped together in the wilderness, they're going to have to face a few hard truths if they're going to make it back to the world.

But even if they manage it, the experience will leave them forever changed.

Without A Compass

Excerpt

He’d only just managed to get his boxers on in time when the outer door swung inwards and let in a burst of light. For a moment he couldn’t see and he threw his hand up to shield his eyes. “Hello?” he squeaked.

“Oh, hey,” a deep voice replied.

Riley froze as the door swung back and he was left looking at a sweat-soaked Kai. His vest and very short shorts clung to his damp, muscular body. The vision it offered up made Riley gulp.

The tattoos on his arms appeared to gleam under the sheen of sweat from whatever workout he’d just completed. Amongst the varied designs, Riley could make out a bear and a skull surrounded by roses. The colours were muted. His artist had used subtle shades to create tone. The overall effect was powerful but not overwhelming.

Plus, it didn’t hurt that the arms carrying the decoration were huge and chiselled to perfection. Riley had almost died of happiness the couple of times Kai had casually draped one of them across his shoulders the night before.

He remembered where he was. He needed to do or say something before the moment stretched out any further and became weird.

His natural instinct was to snatch his towel up and cover his body. That would definitely make things awkward though. So Riley used all his self-control to merely pick it up as casually as he could and started drying off his hair. Just like you’re at the gym, he told himself.

“Morning,” he said brightly. “You go for a run too?”

Kai blinked a couple of times. It was obvious he was looking at Riley’s almost totally naked body and Riley tried his best not to shy away in shame. No, he wasn’t nearly as ripped as Kai was, but he knew he didn’t look too bad. This was probably awkward for Kai too, especially after last night. But if they could just move past it, it would be fine.

As if coming out of a daze, Kai shook his head and walked forward. His towel was slung over his shoulder and he had a simple all-in-one shower-gel-and-shampoo bottle clutched in his hand. “Oh yeah mate,” he said cheerfully, answering Riley’s question. “It’s beautiful around here. It would be rude not to go exploring.”

Riley chuckled and thankfully found himself dry enough to pull on his shorts. He felt slightly less vulnerable with that small amount of clothing protecting him.

“I had to sweat out the hangover. How are you feeling?”

He didn’t just mean after the alcohol. But he wondered if Kai would pretend nothing out of the ordinary had happened. He wouldn’t blame him if he did; in fact, it would probably be best for both of them if that’s how they moved forward.

“I’m good,” he said, stopping at the sink next to where Riley’s products were littered. “Can I borrow some of that?”

Riley nodded and offered up his toothpaste. Kai pulled a toothbrush from his back pocket and got to scrubbing.

As Kai was unable to talk for the moment, Riley applied his deodorant in increasingly awkward silence. He should think of something to say, something funny! Something that wasn’t ‘So, do you regret that kiss last night? Because I don’t.’

Instead, he chewed at his lips and began picking up his various tubes and tubs to collect them back into his wash kit.

“Whereabouts did you-”

“How did you-”

They both looked at each other, then laughed. Kai spat out his toothpaste and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I was just wondering how you slept.”

“Oh, fine thanks, fine.” Riley paused as Kai began peeling off his vest. “Uh, you?”

Kai rubbed his face. He seemed a bit sheepish for some reason. Riley hardly noticed though as he was focusing extremely hard on not staring at his pectorals.

“Yeah, fine,” he grunted. But he offered up a smile that cancelled out whatever had bothered him.

Review

This is the second book I read by this author and I have to say, Without a Compass is as uplifting and charming as A Ballad of Confetti, Cake and Catastrophes was. Both stories are delightful.

Without a Compass is a wonderful tale of one young man (Riley) coming into his own and having his dreams come true and the other (Kai) discovering a side to himself he never knew existed. And their journeys of discovery take place against a backdrop of loving families, nasty acquaintances, and good friends.

First and foremost this is a feel good story. Yes, there is some angst and quite a bit of soul searching, but nothing to heart wrenching. Riley is a wonderful dork who’s overly aware that he doesn’t quite fit in and is teetering on a line between not wanting to stand out and needing to be himself. Kai on the other hand is a big cuddly sweetheart of a man. Big strong and somewhat intimidating, he has the biggest heart and the softest, occasionally surprising, nature.

I thoroughly enjoyed the slow journey these two men undertook on their way towards each other. It was pretty much a case of one step forward two steps back, especially because Riley can’t make himself belief that Kai could possibly be interested in him.

I loved the realism in this story. Kai made mistakes, used potentially painful words and stereotypes, totally unaware of doing so. Not because there was anything bad about him but just because he didn’t know any better. And I’m so glad the author resolved this potential drama not through a huge fight but during a friendly conversation.

I like Helen Juliet’s writing voice. It’s almost as if she’s chatting to me. The language is smooth and easy (in the best possible sense of the word), allowing me to float through the story.

If I had an issue it is that it was difficult to accept that Riley would be quite as inept at camping and hiking as he was. No matter how much he disliked it, he couldn’t possibly have spent all his younger years with two Scout leader parents and not pick a thing or two up along the way, no matter how reluctantly.

Other than that Without a Compass was a wonderful and cute feel good story! Perfect for those moments when you need a book to lift your spirits and make you smile.

How to Walk Like a Man (Howl at the Moon #2) by Eli Easton - Audio Book Review

Audio book
Narrator: Matthew Shaw
Duration: 7 hrs 53 mins

Blurb

Deputy Roman Charsguard survived Afghanistan where he lost his best friend—his K-9 handler James. Roman was a military dog until two years ago when he developed the ability to shift into a human. It’s not easy to learn how to be a man. He found a place to live in Mad Creek, a haven for the secret world of dog shifters. Finding a reason to live has been harder. That is, until a certain human walks into the Mad Creek Sheriff’s office and starts making trouble.

Matt Barclay has the worst luck. First he was shot in a SWAT drug raid, then he was sent as DEA investigator to Mad Creek, a little town in the California mountains. Matt’s job is to keep a lookout for illegal drug farms, but nobody in the town wants him there. And then there’s Roman, Matt’s erstwhile baby-sitter. He’s the hottest guy Matt’s ever seen, even if he is a bit peculiar. If the town doesn’t kill him, sexual frustration just might.

The town is counting on Roman to prevent Matt from learning about dog shifters, Matt’s counting on Roman to be his work partner and tell him the truth, and Roman’s trying to navigate love, sex, and a whole lot of messy human emotions. Who knew it was so complicated to walk like a man?

Review

Let me begin by saying that I enjoyed How to Walk Like a Man probably even more than I did How to Howl at the Moon. And that’s saying something since I loved the first book in this series.

On some levels this story mirrors what happened in the previous title. This too is the story of a dog shifter (quickened) falling for a human having to compromise between his feelings and the necessity to keep his true nature hidden. If that was hard for Lance in the first book, it is even more difficult for Roman in this one since he’s only been human for two years and is still coming to terms with what it actually means and entails to be a man. And yet, nothing about this story felt like a repeat because Roman and Matt where and sounded nothing like Lance and Tim.

I loved how Roman’s story allowed the reader to learn more about the quickened universe. There’s a very clear difference between Lance and others who have been quickened since birth and Roman who has only recently evolved to his human form. Roman’s voice was so perfectly presented. He sounded the way I imagine my dog might sound if she could talk. The innocence with which he sees the world is charming. His open eyed wonder at all his new abilities (hands really are the best thing ever) and discoveries had me both laughing and sighing out loud. Roman pulled me through every emotion known to man and made it an enthralling journey.

Not that there’s anything wrong with Matt. Not at all. He was charming, patient, and an absolute pleasure to spent time with. But he wasn’t Roman. He was perfect for Roman, but he wasn’t him.

For me Roman is this book. Not there isn’t a whole lot more to enjoy, there is. We get to meet up with Lance and Tim again, as well as other members of the pack we first saw in How to Howl at the Moon. The drug wars are still going on and putting our friends in Mad Creek at risk. And the secret of the quickened still needs to be kept under wraps. Like its predecessor, this book has laugh out loud humour, heart stopping suspense, tender moments, hot sexy times, and overall wonderful storytelling. Combined with the smooth narration I can honestly say it was almost eight hours of listening bliss.

But it was Roman who lifted this book from ‘great read’ to ‘oh be still my beating heart fabulous’.

The Bones of Our Fathers by Elin Gregory - Review Tour

Length: 80,000 words approx

Publisher: Manifold Press

Cover Design: Michelle Peart

Blurb

Malcolm Bright, brand new museum curator in a small Welsh Border town, is a little lonely until – acting as emergency archaeological consultant on a new housing development – he crosses the path of Rob Escley, aka Dirty Rob, who makes Mal’s earth move in more ways than one.

Then Rob discovers something wonderful, and together they must combat greedy developers and a treasure hunter determined to get his hands on the find. Are desperate measures justified to save the bones of our fathers? Will Dirty Rob live up to his reputation? Do museum curators really do it meticulously?

Answers must be found for the sake of Mal’s future, his happiness and his heart.

Review

This book hit quite a few of my buttons. For starters it deals with archaeology, something which has always fascinated me. Then there’s the fact it features Mal and Rob, two utterly likeable yet totally realistic main characters who captured my imagination as soon as they were introduced. And, always important for me, the story scores rather low on the angst scale. Sure there is a dilemma the two men have to overcome but it, thankfully, doesn’t come with heart wrenching devastation.

So, those are the reasons why this book might well have been written to my personal requirements. They are not the only reasons this book struck a note with me though. I think I loved just about everything about this book. I loved the small town Mal has settled in and I had such a wonderful time getting to know his new home and the people who live there together with him. What’s not to adore about a community in which everybody knows everybody and they all look out for each other, even when separated by several centuries and while not always seeing eye to eye?

The historical aspect to the story was fascinating as was the archaeological angle. I smiled and sympathized when Mal had to explain that Time Team does not give a realistic portrayal of an archaeological dig. I can easily imagine this is something archaeologists have to do more than once in real life too. And the discovery itself was inspired; giving the story an extra level of intrigue.

But what touched me most was the care the people in this world took of each other, and Mal’s journey towards understanding that he’s no longer alone but has been included in a community that looks after its own.

In short, The Bones of Our Fathers is a wonderful, intriguing and uplifting story, filled with characters all of whom are diverse, original, and recognisable individuals I’d love to meet in real life. The writing is amazing and the story fascinating and sweet. I’m so glad this is the first book in a (much) longer series. I can’t wait for the next instalment; it’s going to be a delight to spend time with this fascinating cast of characters again and see others find their happily ever afters.

Author Bio

Elin Gregory lives in South Wales and works in a museum in a castle built on the edge of a Roman Fort! She reckons that's a pretty cool job.

Elin usually writes on historical subjects, and enjoys weaving the weird and wonderful facts she comes across in her research into her plots. She likes her heroes hard as nails but capable of tenderness when circumstances allow. Often they are in danger, frequently they have to make hard choices, but happy endings are always assured.

Current works in progress include one set during the Great War, another in WW2, one set in the Dark Ages and a series of contemporary romances set in a small town on the Welsh border.

Review

For the sake of this review I’m going to assume you’re familiar with K.C. Wells’ books and the way she writes wonderful, imaginative and very hot romances. Well, Out of the Shadows is certainly wonderful as well as imaginative. This however is a title in Dreamspinner’s Dreamspun Desires series and as such there isn’t a whole lot of on page sex. However, when these two men do show us what they get up to in the bedroom they are most definitely very hot together.

But, sex is not what this story is about. This is the touching tale of a man in his early thirties who’s lived as a recluse for the past eight years, hiding from the world and rarely interacting with anyone unless it is via email or telephone. Christian has been doing this for so long and has organised his life so well that he’s half convinced himself that life as he lives it is enough. And he needs to believe that because he can’t imagine living his life any other way.

Enter Josh. He’s been curious about the man living in apartment #1, the man nobody has ever seen; the man all sorts of weird theories are spun around. So when his employer sends him to do work inside that apartment, Josh is excited that finally the mystery will be resolved. Except that there is no sign of the inhabitant when he lets himself into the apartment.

Slowly contact is made, be it through a closed and locked door at first, but it isn’t long before Josh sees Christian face to face and realises why the man has been hiding (no I’m not going to reveal the reason). Now his mission changes from finding out who the mystery man is to helping Christian come out of his self-imposed isolation.

Josh’s arrival makes Christian resent his solitary existence. He’d convinced himself he could live his life more or less as a recluse, but having Josh in his apartment, interacting with him, forces him to take a closer look at his non-life and realise that he does want to do more than just survive. He wants to live again and maybe even love while he’s at it.

And so Christian, encouraged and supported by Josh, starts on a slow but unstoppable journey back into the world. It’s a beautiful process of small steps and huge courage.  Josh was a marvel; I adored him. The way he very slowly coaxes Christian out of his self-imposed isolation was an utter delight to witness. As for Christian, it is impossible not to feel for him, just as I couldn’t stop myself from cheering every time he took another step outside his comfort zone.

Now, before you think this is an angst-filled and heavy story, allow me to reassure you. While Out of the Shadows certainly has a storyline that will touch you deeply, it is also a fun and at times laugh-out-loud funny story. What’s not to enjoy about two men who are huge Harry Potter fans (or should I say nerds). Throw in Joss’s friends and you have more than enough lighthearted moments to balance out Christian’s issues. I can honestly say I enjoyed every single sentence in this book.

In short, Out of the Shadows is a sweet, heartwarming, and uplifting story that will leave you with a huge smile on your face. It is exactly the sort of read I find myself in need of these days.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Emptiness filled Lane as he watched the blue ocean appear then disappear as condos and other buildings slipped by. Mike made a left, heading away from the slice of heaven they’d all enjoyed for the last few days. Maybe it was just the trip ending, but he thought it was more. He watched Mike, noticing the stubble on his jaw and how it covered his chin and went down his neck. They stopped for a light, and Mike glanced at him, his lips curved up in a smile that made Lane’s stomach twist. Why it made him feel funny, he had no clue. “So what do you really think about Thomas and Clay?” Mike’s question threw him. “What am I supposed to say?” Mike shrugged then went back to looking at the road as the light changed to green. “I don’t know; tell me what you really think.” He stared out the front windshield for a moment, wondering how to answer the question. “Well, I like Clay. I guess I just…” Another light stopped them, and Mike turned to look at him with his brows raised. “Are you jealous?” “What?” Lane couldn’t believe Mike had asked him if he was jealous. “Why would I be jealous?” “Just, you know, you thought you would get with Thomas if he was going to get with anyone?” Lane shook his head. “No. Not at all. I’m not jealous. It’s not like that.” “Talk. We don’t have long before we get to the airport.” The light changed again, and Mike took off. Lane turned to stare out the window, unsure how to voice what he felt. “I don’t like being alone.” “Then get out there and date someone.” He shook his head and turned to stare at Mike. The scene out the window wasn’t as interesting since they’d turned down a street away from the water. He missed the water, but what he missed more was the guys and being with them. “I can’t find anyone.” Mike chuckled. “Tell me about it. I’m surrounded by sexy women while I’m at work, but I can’t connect with them.” Depression made his head ache. Or maybe he was depressed, because in addition to having no clue what to do, his head hurt. What if he never figured life out? He would be one of those old men at the bars looking to pick up young women who had no interest in a rotten old fart. He shivered at the mental image. Mike’s words interrupted his thoughts. “I’ll be in New York next week.” “You should stop by.” The words were out before he even could think what that would mean. He worked nights and slept during the day. Mike was silent for a while, and they were close to the airport before he spoke again. “If I came up on Tuesday, could I stay at your place?” His earlier trepidation was gone. Screw sleeping, he’d have Mike with him. He nodded, excitement filling him. “I’d like that. I have to work on Tuesday night, but I’m off on Wednesday and Thursday nights.” Mike shot him a sweet grin. He pushed the tingly feelings away and rolled his eyes when Mike looked away. “Works for me. I’m working a little on Thursday and most of the afternoon and night on Friday. I’ll stay until Sunday.” “Awesome. It’ll be good seeing you again.” He meant it too. He could sleep after Mike went home. They pulled into the parking lot for the rental return, and his chest squeezed. If he thought he’d been melancholy before, this was way worse. He didn’t want to head home. He’d been alive when he was with the guys. The vacation had been great, but it reminded him of how much he missed his brothers—and they were his brothers. Seeing Mike next week would be good. Heck, he wished they lived closer. He wanted to see everyone more often, but for now, Skype would have to do. They got their bags out of the trunk and headed into the terminal after they handed over the keys to the car. Heat was building, and he was happy to be heading back to cooler temperatures. At least he told himself he was happy to leave. Actually, he wanted them all to stay here and live together. Maybe not together, but dammit, they should be closer to each other. Once inside, they headed upstairs to security. They both passed through without any issues. Mike’s flight was leaving soon, so he had to go. Mike pulled him into a hug and Lane held on, not wanting to let Mike leave. It had been an amazing vacation and he didn’t want it to end. “Hey, I’ll see you on Tuesday. I’ll call when I’m close.” He squeezed Lane again then backed away. “Sure, have a safe trip home.” He hated saying those words. Their home should be together. “You bet.” Mike gave a quick wave and was gone. Lane felt like his heart had been torn out. He missed Thomas and Clay, and Brent and Jake, but he missed Mike most of all.

Meet the Author

Thank you for reading my stories. I wasn't sure when I sat down to write if I had it in me to finish this. It has been a journey. I love reading. It's my greatest pleasure to sit down with a good book and live inside the pages. My perfect day would be a book, good music, and unlimited cocktails. I'm going to try to keep on writing and reading, playing with my dogs and cats, and living life.
