BUILDING BONDS by Morticia Knight

Pages: 162
Date: September 13, 2015
Details: No. 1 Kiss of Leather
E-book / Own

The blurb:

“Kyle’s a natural sub who builds dungeon furniture, yet has no interest in BDSM. It takes a hunky Dom to show him just what he’s been missing.

After Kyle’s partner of five years leaves him for another man on the night of their housewarming party, the shy, early-thirties carpenter needs to do a major reassessment of his life in addition to raising some serious cash. With no one to help him pay the lease on his Los Angeles condo, he worries how he’ll survive. His best friend sets up a meeting with one of the Doms and partners at Kiss of Leather, a gay BDSM club being built as a premier destination for those who want the best of the best.

Master Gavin not only wants the best—he demands it. When he meets Kyle, he assumes that part of the builder’s reticence to share anything personal with him must be due to his experiences with an abusive former Master. Not one to back down from a challenge, Gavin determines to break through the walls surrounding the beautiful man he can’t get out of his mind. He’s hopeful that once he convinces Kyle to sign an initial contract, Kyle might be the first sub to open up his heart.

Misunderstandings and accusations almost destroy everything between them before they have a real chance to begin. However, the true obstacle becomes not only whether Kyle will embrace BDSM as a lifestyle, but also whether he can handle a full-time D/s relationship with a big, bad, scary Dom who’s as sexy as hell.”

My thoughts:

Building Bonds starts off as a comedy of errors. Kyle has no idea he is a natural submissive in dire need of a strong Dom to take him in hand and therefore thoroughly confused by his reaction to Master Gavin. He’s attracted to the man from the very first moment he sets eyes on him and even fantasizes about what submitting to him might be like while convinced he hasn’t got it in him to submit.

Gavin on the other hand convinces himself Kyle has suffered at the hands of an abusive Dom and needs to be healed, while completely failing to see – or hear – that Kyle has never experienced the D/s dynamic before in his life. This would be a frustrating oversight on the part of an experienced Dom if it weren’t for the fact that Kyle builds exquisite dungeon furniture.

What follows is a sweet, hot and almost angst-free story. The developing relationship between Kyle and his Dom, once all the misunderstandings had been cleared up, was beautiful and intriguing. The story contains a lot of details as to how to establish, grow and maintain a D/s relationship and because it is told from both Gavin’s and Kyle’s perspective we get a wonderful insight into their thoughts and feelings.

And yet, I kept on hoping for a little bit more. All throughout reading the story I felt as if I was being held at arm’s length; given an insight into the feelings and emotions of both men without ever being allowed to experience them. And that’s a shame because with a little bit extra what was a good book would, for me, have been great. Having said that, I have every intention of reading future instalments in this series. All the secondary characters were more than interesting enough to make me curious about their stories.

FIRST by KC Wells: An ARC Review

FIRST by K.C. Wells

Details: ARC received from Author
E-book

The blurb:

“It’s taken Tommy Newsome a while to get his head around being gay.

Growing up in a small town in Georgia, hasn’t prepared him for the more liberal life of a student at the university in Athens. Add to that the teachings of his parents and his church, and you have one shy young man who feels out of his depth. Working on his daddy’s farm hasn’t given him any chance of a social life, certainly not one like the clubs of Atlanta have on offer. Not that Tommy feels comfortable when he gets to sample it—Momma’s lectures still ring loudly inside his head.

All that changes when he goes to his first gay bar and sets eyes on Mike Scott.

When Mike’s not behind the bar at Woofs, he’s busy with his life as adult entertainer Scott Masters. Twenty years in the industry and the times, they are a-changing. Mike’s not had much luck in the relationship department, but as his mom is fond of telling him, you keep fishing in the same pond, you’re gonna reel in the same kind of fish. Maybe it’s time for a change.

And then a beautiful young man asks Mike to be his first….”

My thoughts:

This is going to be a review in two parts and I’ll start with Mike and Tommy’s story.

As love stories go this one is sweet and mesmerizing. At first glance these two characters have little to nothing in common. Innocent, young and naive Tommy stems from a very religious family living in rural backwater. While studying away from home has more or less allowed him to come to terms with the fact he’s gay, he is not the type to go out partying and searching for new experiences.

Mike on the other hand is experience personified. Not only is he confident in who he is, he’s not ashamed of his almost twenty-year long career in porn either. If he has an issue with his chosen profession it is that the men he has dated in the past couldn’t deal with it and left him over it.

Despite the differences between them, the attraction between Mike and Tommy is instant. In fact the attraction on Tommy’s part is so strong that despite his shyness he continues to visit the club where Mike works as a bartender every Saturday night, just to be able to admire the man from a distance.

When the two men at last do come together it is a thing of beauty. The intimacy between them is as hot as it is tender. It almost makes you feel every virgin should have the opportunity to receive their introduction into sex at the hands of an older and very considerate partner.

While I wouldn’t call this an angsty book I have to admit that at times it was hard not to read this book with tiny knots in my stomach. When Tommy thinks about sex in these terms: “There are just some things you don’t talk about”, it’s impossible not to hold your breath and wait for trouble to arrive. I mean, if he can’t bring himself to talk about it, how on earth is he going to deal with Mike’s career in porn. In fact, the certainty that a crisis was awaiting these two characters I’d gotten so very attached to, kept me on a knife edge while reading. And yet when the issue of Mike’s career does explode between them, Tommy managed to surprise me. I don’t want to say too much about this because that would constitute a major and unforgivable spoiler but I would like to add that I love originality in my characters and Tommy certainly doesn’t react like the vast majority of characters in other books I’ve read.

Both Tommy and Mike were very easy characters to love. Tommy’s innocence when the book starts borders on being too much of a sweet thing. Watching him grow into himself and his relationship with Mike is a thing of beauty though and by the time the story ends he may have lost some of his innocence, he hasn’t lost any of his sweetness and his inner strength took my breath away. And before you think this makes him sound like a too good to be true character, let me reassure you; while he may be sweet he is never less than human and believable.

Mike, the more experienced person in this relationship both due to his age and his chosen career, is not always the more sensible of the two. And that gave the story a wonderful depth. It would have been so easy for Tommy to be the cause of the trouble they run into, but he isn’t. While he is younger in years, Tommy turns out to be one with the more sensible and level head on his shoulders when push comes to shove.

And that’s it for the first part of my review; an awful lot of words to tell you how much I adored this story.

Everything I wrote above would have been more than enough to rate this book five stars. What raises this book to the level of ‘extra-special’ is the way it deals with and the insight it gives us into the workings of the porn industry.

Gay for pay and bareback sex are not subjects I’d given a lot of thought to before reading this book. Obviously I’d heard about both, I just hadn’t paid much attention to them, other than to totally disapprove of bareback sex under almost all circumstances.

I’ve read stories set in the world of porn before but this was the first time I felt I got a real insight into that industry, where it has been, where it’s at and where it is going – and the picture isn’t always pretty. I walked away from this book feeling I had a better idea of what working in that industry is like on levels you could never get from ‘just’ watching a porn scene. The reflections on the porn industry in this book felt at times personal and that added an extra level to the reading experience. I usually rush my way through KC Wells’ books because she captivates me in the first paragraph and keeps me hooked until the very last word. And that was true for this story too; when I’ll re-read First, it will be in a reading marathon. But I forced myself to slow down for this book. I wanted to think about things and read between the lines. And that’s what made this book extra special.

Well that and Tommy and Mike and the wonderful secondary characters in their lives. Tommy’s adopted family and Mike’s colleagues were fun and enriched an already wonderful story. And then there is the cover. I rarely, if ever, remark on covers. While I like beautiful covers as much as the next person, they rarely influence whether or not I’ll take a closer look at a title. This cover speaks to my heart though. For the first time ever I may have to buy a printed copy of a book I already have on my Kindle because the image on my reader is too hidden for my liking.

MAKE ME FORGET by Jacqueline Anne: Promo, Excerpt and Contest

Bestselling romance author, Paige Mattheson, is experiencing the worst case of writer’s block. She hasn’t written a word in weeks and is struggling with the intimate scenes in her book. With deadlines quickly approaching, she goes on a weekend getaway to the beach to clear her head. She promises herself she will relax and find her true self again, along with some inspiration to see past her heartache and complete her novel.

Fun loving, Tyler Barrow, is vacationing in Montauk, New York. He is passionate about his career as a teacher and about surfing. When Tyler misses his original flight home, a miscommunication with the owner of the rental unit finds Tyler staring at a beautiful woman in his kitchen. He is instantly drawn to her and eager to find out why, even if it is only for the weekend.

Paige is initially annoyed by the naked intruder who has interrupted her quiet vacation. She sticks to the promise she made herself and tries to let go and have some fun.

Will Tyler be able to make Paige forget about her past? Will fate prove to be more than just a weekend fling even though they live on different ends of the earth?

Only time and a bestselling novel will tell.

Excerpt:

He got up and sauntered out to the kitchen, stark naked. It was how he’d slept, how he always did. He made his way around the corner and froze.

Standing in his kitchen, lightly tapping her fingers on the countertop as she waited for the coffee to finish brewing, was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. Her straight, light brown hair draped over her shoulders. She was wearing boy short panties, revealing the bottom curves of a sexy, plump ass and a matching tank top.

Damn.

The side view of her breasts looked amazing in her tight shirt. She stood on her tiptoes reaching for a coffee mug from the top shelf. Tyler’s eyes traveled from the top of her head all the way down to her pointed toes. His breath hitched at the sight before him. All thoughts went out of his mind as he took a step…and tripped over the rug in the hallway.

Her eyes darted toward him, and she let out a high-pitched scream. She pulled a knife from the wooden block on the counter. “Stay back,” she yelled, holding the knife away from her, preparing for battle. “Who the hell are you?”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Tyler put his hands in the air to show her he was unarmed and harmless. He tried to speak calmly to her, but his racing heart and the excitement he was experiencing was making it difficult. A small smile found his lips. This gorgeous woman was holding a knife to him and yelling at him, and it was turning him on.

The woman’s green eyes nearly bugged out of her head as she studied him.

Just then, Tyler realized he was naked. His hands quickly covered his junk—or tried to. His morning wood, turned full-on erection from seeing a beautiful woman in her panties and a tight-ass shirt, was not helping.

“Why are you in my condo?” she demanded to know.

“Your condo? It’s mine. I have been renting it for the past few weeks.”

She vigorously shook her head. “No, no, no. I just rented it a few days ago because it was available this weekend. The owner told me the renter left earlier than expected.”

“I told him I needed it longer than expected because I missed my flight home. Shit. I’m sorry. I—” Tyler took a step forward.

“Oh for crying out loud! Could you please put some pants on? I can’t talk to you while you’re naked!”

Tyler nodded and scurried back to his room to put on a pair of shorts.

When he came back, the beautiful woman was frantically pacing the kitchen, waving the knife around. “This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening! I am supposed to be unwinding. I have work to do. I have a fucking book to finish,” she ranted.

BENT ARROW by Posy Roberts: ARC Review

BENT ARROW by Posy Roberts

Pages: 65
Date: August 18, 2015
Details: Novella
             ARC received from the author
E-book

The blurb:

“Sometimes curves in the road take you right where you belong.

Luther Almond’s life working the Bakken oil field is perfect—short-lived jobs, temporary housing, and easy hookups. That’s one reason he won’t move home when he inherits the lake house. When Erik Heat bends over to fix Luther’s pipes, his tattoos hint he might be up for more than working on the drain. The last thing Luther expects is to want more from this guy than one night.

Every time they’re together, Luther is more grounded and Erik more confident. When the lake house demands attention, Luther asks for Erik’s help. There he imagines a more permanent life, one where he stops running. But he wants Erik by his side. Can he find the courage—and the words—to ask?”

My thoughts:

“The arrow is bent wood because I don’t fit anywhere: not in the straight world and not in the gay world. It was just my way of acknowledging that and celebrating the beauty of it at the same time.”

I only discovered Posy Roberts’ books recently but I have to say I’m delighted I did. It never ceases to be a wonderful experience when I run into an author who tells good stories using carefully chosen and beautifully applied words while introducing memorable characters. I also like it when an author takes me by surprise and turns my expectations on their head, and that’s exactly what happened in this story.

Given Luther and Erik’s individual backgrounds I would have expected Erik to be the one reluctant to proclaim the growing love between them to the world. After all he has had the bad experiences to justify fear and even paranoia, while Luther ‘only’ has his fears of what may happen if he comes out in his home town and to his family. But, that is not how it plays out. When push comes to shove Luther has to overcome the obstacles he sees in his way before their relationship has a chance of growing into something permanent.

But that’s later on in the story. At first it is very much Luther who is taking care of Erik and making sure he is as safe as he can possibly be. And I loved the gentle way in which this apparently rough and ready oilman took care of Erik.

It is very hard to write this review without giving too much of the story away so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Let me just say that I enjoyed spending time with these two men and discovering the softness underneath their tough exteriors. All too often the confidence we think we see in other people hides deep and mostly well hidden secrets and insecurities. Posy Roberts did a wonderful job showing me that Luther and Erik were a lot more than hard men doing hard jobs under very harsh conditions. Chapter by chapter we got to see more of who the men really were, beneath the public masks they wore, and they emerged as beautifully flawed, realistic, memorable and very attractive characters.

Bent Arrow was a captivating read and because it’s an novella I was able to read the story in one sitting which was just as well because I would have had a very hard time walking away in the middle of it.

Falling in love isn’t part of Josh’s life plan—especially not with a client.

The blurb:

Josh has a plan: get through uni with a good degree and no debts. Focused on his goals, he’s working as an escort to pay his way. He enjoys the no-strings sex and doesn’t have the time or inclination for a relationship. Falling in love definitely isn’t part of the deal—especially not with a client.

When Rupert meets Josh in a bar, he’s smitten on sight. He’s never paid for sex before, but when Josh propositions him, he can’t resist. He should have known one night would never be enough. Luckily for him, he has an inheritance to support his addiction to Josh, because his job in IT wouldn’t cover the cost.

With each appointment the lines get increasingly blurred. Something is developing between them that feels more like a relationship than a business transaction, but they come from different worlds and to go from client-and-escort to lovers seems impossible. If they want a future together, Josh and Rupert have a lot to overcome.

Excerpt:

“I like your lip ring,” Rupert said. His gaze dropped lower to Josh’s collarbones. “What are your tattoos of?”
“Swallows.” Rupert would just be able to see the wing tips that showed in this low-necked T-shirt. “Two of them.”
“Have you got any other tattoos?”
Josh gave a slow, teasing smile. “Maybe. Do you want me to show you?”
Rupert met his eyes again. There was a flicker of uncertainty before he answered. “Yes. I’d like that.”
Josh turned over the possibilities in his mind. It had been a long time since he’d had sex for anything other than for money. He usually saw clients at least three nights a week. They scratched the itch for him, and he didn’t have the time or inclination to hook up with other guys. He hadn’t dated since he’d started working as an escort. Josh didn’t like lying about his job, but most guys didn’t want to date escorts.
It would be easy to pick Rupert up tonight, though, and have no-strings sex with him for fun rather than cash. But Josh’s rent was due.
“Me too. But it’ll cost you,” he finally said.
Rupert frowned, obvious confusion crossing his features as he tried to make sense of Josh’s words. “What? I don’t—”
“You’re hot, and I wish I could do this without asking you for money. But a client let me down this evening. I have a hotel room booked and paid for next door, and I need someone to cover the cost for me.” The lie came smoothly. “I can’t afford to have sex for free tonight.”
Rupert’s mouth dropped open. Shock was evident on his face, but there was something else that was harder to read. His cheeks flooded pink again and his eyes went dark. “You’re….” His voice came out husky, and he cleared his throat. “You’re a….”
“A sex worker. An escort, to be precise. Hooker, rent boy, you get the gist. I’m an expensive one too. But my clients think I’m worth the money.” Josh waited, tension making a muscle tick in his jaw as he forced himself to stay still and hold Rupert’s gaze. On the occasions he’d tried picking up clients face-to-face, their reactions had varied. Interest, anger, excitement, disgust… he’d seen them all. He steeled himself, ready for rejection.
Rupert licked his lips. “How much?” he finally asked.

My thoughts:

Like a Lover is the sequel to Helping Hand, which I read and thoroughly enjoyed not too long ago. While I would certainly advice anyone to read Helping Hand first, it is not necessary to have read that book or be familiar with the story or characters to fully enjoy Like a Lover. And ‘enjoy’ is the operative word in that sentence.

Rupert and Josh are what Jay Nortecote writes so very well. Normal and recognisable young man who sound and act like the sort of people you would love to have has your friends. Okay, maybe not completely normal.

Maybe Josh isn’t entirely the boy next door unless, that is, the boy next door happens to be an escort. While his job is a means to an end for Josh, it added bonus. His plan works perfectly and he is well on his way to making it through uni without getting into debt, except that he’d never expected to fall for a client.

And Rupert isn’t quite the boy next door either, unless the boy next door happens to have come into an inheritance large enough to not only afford him a mortgage free apartment but also the ability to pay for frequent hook-ups with the escort he’s starting to fall for.

But of course they aren’t intrinsically different from anybody else. They struggle with the feelings they are developing while engaged in what may be a sort of relationship but more of the financial than the romantic variety. With Rupert afraid Josh won’t see him anymore if he admits his feelings and Josh not seeing how a relationship could possibly grow out of what started off as a financial transaction, at least one of them needs a severe talking to in order to see sense.

Like a Lover was pretty much the perfect read for me. With likable but flawed characters, a fascinating premise and a near to ideal balance between angst and humour in a smoothly written story I really couldn’t ask for more.

It was nice to get a few glimpses of Jez an Mac from Helping Hand, still going strong six months later. I really liked that the roles were reversed this time. Where Josh had to talk sense into Jez in Helping Hand, this time it is Jez who has to get Josh’s head out of his arse about Rupert.

This was a charming and very hot and sexy story. Since one of the main characters is an escort the frequent sex scenes didn’t come as a surprise. And after reading many books by this author, neither did the quality of those scenes. Jay Northcote writes hot and steamy very well.

In fact, but I may have said this before, Jay Northcote writes a wonderful story very well. I can always trust her to keep me fully entertained, give me a wonderful reading experience and leave me happy and fulfilled when the story has ended. There’s really not a whole lot more you can ask for in your books.

THE FLAMBOYANT FLAMINGO by Theo Fenraven: Release Day Review with Buy Links

THE FLAMBOYANT FLAMINGO by Theo Fenraven

Pages: 117
Date: August 18, 2015
Details: ARC review
E-book

The blurb:

“Benched for a minor knee injury, pro baseball player Devin Carter recuperates on beautiful Islamorada in the Keys, where he meets Jim Dellwood, half-owner of a run-down resort. The attraction is immediate, the chemistry is good, but it’s not love yet. They agree to stay in touch but keep things casual.
Back in Sarasota, Devin hooks up with another player for no-strings sex but quickly realizes Jorge Rodriguez, newest teammate for the Suns, has a different take on their relationship. With things heating up between him and Jim, Devin tries to break it off, but Jorge won’t take no for an answer.
Set in Florida, the sun-drenched land of eternal summer, and played out against the backdrop of high-stakes baseball, this tale of love and obsession will keep you awake long into the night.”
Note: This story was originally published as The Blue Paradise but has since been revised and new scenes have been added.

My thoughts:

It is a well known fact I’m a huge fan of Theo Fenraven’s writing. He can do things with words other people, myself included, can only aspire to. In one sentence he’ll give you a description others would need a full paragraph for. He consistently draws me into the world he’s created and by the time I’m ready to leave again his characters and the issues they’ve faced have become a part of me as if I was there, experiencing the whole thing with them.

The Flamboyant Flamingo was no exception to that rule. We’re introduced to Devin and Jim, two young men who stand out because at first glance there’s nothing too remarkable about them. They’re nice, considerate and tolerant. And before you think that makes them or the story boring, let me put you straight. For me it was a wonderful change of pace to read a book in which neither of the main characters had huge personal issues or past ordeals to overcome. Not that there’s anything wrong with books in which that is the case, but it is nice to occasionally read about characters who just get on with life, like I do myself most of the time. J

Of course it’s not quite that simple or this would indeed be a boring story. For starters Devin is a baseball player getting very close to beating the existing record for homeruns. As a result he’s become something of a minor celebrity, a distinction he wears reluctantly.

Jim is a student getting ready for his master’s when the grandfather who’s been raising him since his parents died, gets ill and Jim’s plans get thrown into disarray.

When the two men meet, the attraction is more or less instant but it isn’t long before Devin’s career and Jim’s obligations in the resort, which he runs with his grandfather, force the two men to separate. They agree to stay in contact but no strings attached. As a result the situation gets dicey and what would have been a gentle and easy going romance turns into a toe-curling thriller. I read the second half of this book with my heart in my throat and may have muttered ‘don’t you dare’ a few times while turning the pages.

Most of the sex scenes in this book manage to be very enticing while fading to black; which makes the one on page scene all the hotter. And while I never miss the sex when I read books by this author, that particular scene suddenly made me wish he’d indulge a bit more often. A well written sex thing in the right hands is indeed a thing of beauty.

A funny thing happened after I finished the book. It’s not unusual for the characters in a book I’ve loved to linger in my head and continue their story in my imagination. It is far less common for them to become more rather than less vibrant in my mind. At the time of writing this review two days have gone by since I finished the book and Devin and Jim not only still occupy my thoughts, they are getting stronger and louder as well. This is a new and rather fascinating experience.

I still bless the day I first discovered Theo Fenraven’s books. He is one of the few authors I know who can successfully switch from (sub)genre to (sub)genre and make each of them his own while never losing his unique voice. It really doesn’t matter what this author is writing about, what genre he’s visiting or where the story’s set; each work is original and one-of-a-kind and yet quintessential  Fenraven. A rare gift indeed.
