Blurb

Something is stalking the Aegyptian night and endangering the archaeologists excavating the mysterious temple ruins in Abydos. But is it a vengeful ancient spirit or a very modern conspiracy…

Rafe Lancaster’s relationship with Gallowglass First Heir, Ned Winter, flourishes over the summer of 1900, and when Rafe’s House encourages him to join Ned’s next archaeological expedition, he sees a chance for it to deepen further. Since all the Houses of the Britannic Imperium, Rafe’s included, view assassination as a convenient solution to most problems, he packs his aether pistol—just in case.

Trouble finds them in Abydos. Rafe and Ned begin to wonder if they’re facing opposition to the Temple of Seti being disturbed. What begins as tricks and pranks escalates to attacks and death, while the figure of the Dog—the jackal-headed god Anubis, ruler of death—casts a long shadow over the desert sands. Destruction follows in his wake as he returns to reclaim his place in Abydos. Can Rafe and Ned stand against both the god and House plots when the life of Ned’s son is on the line?

About The Series

Lancaster’s Luck is set in a steampunk world where, at the turn of the 20th century, the eight powerful Convocation Houses are the de facto rulers of the Britannic Imperium. In this world of politics and assassins, a world powered by luminiferous aether and phlogiston and where aeroships fill the skies, Captain Rafe Lancaster, late of Her Majesty’s Imperial Aero Corps, buys a coffee house in one of the little streets near the Britannic Museum in Bloomsbury.

So begins the romantic steampunk adventures which have Rafe, a member of Minor House Stravaigor, scrambling over Londinium’s rooftops on a sultry summer night or facing dire peril in the pitch dark of an Aegyptian night. And all the while, sharing the danger is the man he loves: Ned Winter, First Heir of Convocation House Gallowglass, the most powerful House in the entire Imperium.

Excerpt

The antiquities shop was in a distant corner of the Khan el-Khalili, far inside the tangle of twisting, narrow alleys. By the time we emerged, dusk had fallen over the city and filled the alleyway with a plum-purple twilight. Most of the shops opted for old-fashioned brass lanterns rather than aether globes, and the wavering candles inside barely touched the gloom. Before we entered the shop, the cramped lanes had been crowded with a few tourists and many local people in their traditional garb: galabeyyas for the men and billowing black chadors, like draperies, for the women. Now the alley was empty.

As we passed a sweetmeat store, the owner slammed closed the shutters inside, a booming clash of wood against stone. My heart gave a great bound in my chest, and every sense was heightened. Hushed voices sounded behind the shutters, and the smell of honey, cardamom, and caramel seeped out to fill the alley with sweetness.

Todd’s head had whipped around at the sound. He had his pistol in his hand. He scowled at me. “This isn’t right. Stay alert. And stay close.”

“Trouble?” I shifted the lantern box to my left shoulder and pulled my pistol from its holster, thumbing it on. The aether chamber glowed blue-green.

“Something’s coming our way.” Todd’s gaze darted around at the gathering shadows between the shops where the alley intersected with crisscrossing lanes, and his obvious readiness prompted a little knot to curl in my stomach and lie heavy as lead. “Come on. Let’s get the hell out of here.”

We started down the lane. We walked quickly, but didn’t run. In the near distance came a rushing sound with a soft pounding underneath it. It grew louder. Closer.

The lead weight in my gut twisted and curled some more.

“Get ready to use that gun,” Todd said, terse but calm. “Wait till I tell you.”

We were at a crossroads when they came at us, boiling out of the shadows of the intersecting alley, whirling and spinning.

Dervishes.

I reacted without thought, turning in a flash to face them coming at me, Todd at my back. Behind the crowd, a man’s voice was raised in a chanted prayer. The dervishes didn’t appear to notice that we were there and for an instant—only a few seconds really, though it felt like long minutes—they spun past us, jostling and crowding in, whirligigs with billowing robes, eyes half-closed and arms outstretched for balance.

I was pushed and prodded at as they went past in a haze of faces. The slap-slap-slap of their slippered feet on the rough pavement and the voice of the singer echoed in my ears, in a cycling cadence of booming and fading, booming and fading. I half turned to be aligned with the flow of bodies, and lost my balance against their gyratory rushing when something hot prodded me hard in the left arm. I whirled myself then, leaping a small step to one side to steady myself again, breath coming hard and fast. The hair on my neck lifted as cold ice washed over me.

Beside me, Todd yelled, shooting his pistol into the air. The aether and phlogiston ignited with a roar of white flame that exploded the darkness into a lightning flash so bright it hurt the eyes. And then the crowd was past us, across the junction of alleyways, rotating and dancing up the one opposite from where they’d entered.

My chest heaved, aching to get some air into it. I just couldn’t catch my breath. They’d been close. So close. That noise… that odd whooshing noise in my ears… as if I’d pressed a seashell to my ear, washing in a rushing tsunami of sound. Another breath pulled in against the thumping behind my ribs. And another. And my eyes, my damned damaged eyes, suddenly so acute that my mind replayed every detail they’d seen: the billowing dark robes with flashes of colored cotton beneath, scarlet and blue and green, the odd, flowerpot-shaped felt hats, the quiet ecstasy on the dancers’ smooth faces, the glint of cold silver.

I’d dropped the box of lanterns when the crowd had rushed at us. Lucky, that. When everything went a bit wavery and the warmth running down my left arm dripped red from the tips of my fingers, the box was very handy as a seat.

I sat down before I fell down.

 Excerpt (NSFW)

After three months as a patient at the Phoenix Clinic, the mask Simeon had worn of hedonistic, outrageous model dissolved with the drugs and alcohol that were purged from his system.  His camp, party boy façade hid a quieter, more introspective, sensitive young man—a man who felt everything too keenly, loved too deeply and could not cope with the pain of loss and rejection.

Sober for the first time since his late teens, Simeon was as fragile as a fledgling, bewildered by the colors, scents, and sounds of the big wide world.  He was unsure who the man that returned his stare in the bathroom mirror was.  Who was Simeon Duchamp without his mask, without the crutches of alcohol and drugs to give him the confidence to get through each day?

A gentle knock on the bedroom door startled Simeon from his introspection.  He looked away from the window toward the door to see his favorite young male nurse, Karl poke his head in.

“Your last session with Dr. Schroeder is in twenty minutes”, he informed. "One for the road?”  Karl’s brows waggled provocatively.  Simeon’s lips slid to a salacious smile.

“Lock the door.” he directed, swiftly moving to the bed.  Karl stepped into the room and as instructed he locked the door.  Simeon began by removing his t-shirt and then unbuttoning and sliding out of his jeans.  Karl kicked his soft soled white Croc clogs off, and the thin nurse’s uniform of white trousers and tunic shirt were discarded in seconds.  Simeon stood, his eyes appraising the slender, boyish form of the twenty-eight-year-old nurse.  Karl had offered a pleasing aside from the trauma of therapy.  He was Simeon’s type—blonde, blue-eyed, eager to please, and deliciously well-hung.  Karl approached and pulled Simeon into a deep, messy kiss.

At six foot, Simeon was taller than Karl’s five-foot-six, but what Karl lacked in height, he certainly made up for with his cock.  Simeon longed to devour all ten inches one last time before he left the clinic.  He ran his fingers through short-cropped blonde hair, his hard-on brushing urgently against Karl’s.  He then dragged the naked nurse to lie prone on the hospital bed.  Karl chuckled throatily.  Simeon clambered onto the bed, and long, willowy legs straddled his conquest so they were in the sixty-nine position, the head of his own erection directed at Karl’s willing mouth.

Sim took the man’s thickened, stout, uncut cock in hand and stroked, retracting the sheath of gossamer foreskin over the engorged head, and marveling at why Mother Nature had seen fit to bestow such a monster cock on such a slight man.  He smiled to himself and then directed the plump glans between his parted wet lips.  As much as Simeon would have loved to make a meal out of it, there was no time to play.  Simeon hummed with satisfaction, taking Karl down into his throat, the cock filling him to near gagging point.  Sim drew off, relaxed his muscles, and went back for more, working the cock between his lips like a porn star.  His self-esteem may have hit rock bottom, but with a dick in his mouth, there was at least one thing Simeon was sure he was still good at!

Karl offered preparatory licks and kisses to Simeon’s shaft before opening his warm, pliant mouth and swallowing him down.  The two young men writhed and rocked on the hospital bed, hands caressing desperately.

Simeon was enjoying the suction Karl’s mouth offered; his eyes rolled back in his head with the pleasure of being sucked and sucking in syncopation.  Simeon paused and used some of the saliva dribbling from his mouth to moisten his fingers.  Slowly, Sim eased a wet finger into Karl’s asshole and hooked up seeking his prostate.  The young man beneath him bucked and moaned, thrusting up into Simeon’s mouth, while nearly gagging on Sim’s cock.

When he had regained his faculties, Karl mirrored Sim’s action, giving Simeon the same intimate attention with his probing fingers.

They both pressed into each other's holes, and their hips matched an undulating rhythm.  Fingers massaged deep inside, drawing mutual fevered moans of pleasure.  Simeon almost forgot he was still officially a patient in a Rehab Clinic until minutes later, when he and Karl spilled in warm bitter pulses down each other’s throats.

After a moment to catch their breaths, and final sensual kisses of thanks, both men dressed hurriedly.

“I cannot not be absent for too long.  I told the head nurse I was going for a bathroom break.” Karl admitted.  He made to leave the room, pausing only to blow a kiss to the effette young man with long dark hair sitting on the disheveled bed, licking the last of Karl’s spill from his lips.

Ten minutes later Karl returned.  “Dr. Schroeder is ready for you now Mr. Duchamp, and your car has arrived.”  He announced formally.

“Thank you, Karl; I’ll be out in a minute,” Simeon replied his soft camp French timbre sounding a little breathless as he rushed around packing the last of his belongings.  Karl nodded.

“And thank you for all of your… assistance during my stay Karl”, Sim added with a mischievous flash of his eyes and a grin.

“I wish you all the best with your continued recovery, Mr. Duchamp.”  Karl quirked a knowing smile and blew a kiss before closing the door.

Blurb

Matt Dorning likes his life just the way it is. Escorting provides him with enough money to live in his favorite city, New York, and he’s been doing it long enough that he knows the rules: don’t give it away when there’s always someone who'll pay for it; always leave them wanting more; and never, never lose your heart to a client.

Lucas Sawyer is about to challenge all Matt’s rules. He’s a beautiful man who shouldn’t need to pay for sex, and yet Matt knows he’s the latest hooker in a long line. Lucas lives a life Matt can only dream of, but it doesn’t appear to make him happy: there’s something going on beneath that poised, self-assured exterior. And Matt also knows that his time with Lucas won’t last forever - escorts have a certain shelf life where he’s concerned.

So what happens when the man who doesn’t ‘do’ relationships, starts to question his life? Lucas is about to embark on a journey of self discovery…and Matt’s life is about to get messy…

Although this is part of the Material World series, it is a stand alone novella. Expect sex, silk, and sensuality.

Review

I’m facing a bit of a dilemma. You see, I absolutely adored this story. For me it is most definitely the best in the ‘A Material World’ series so far. So, I could easily gush about this book for several long paragraphs. On the other hand, I would love for you to discover all the joys this story brings for yourself. We’ll see what happens once I start my review proper.

Because there is a lot to gush about in this book. Both Lucas and Matt are wonderful and very easy to like characters. The interactions between them, right from the first moment they meet, were inspired, entertaining, and for the most part brought a huge grin to my face. Even when communication appears to break down, as it is bound to do with two men who don’t really know each other too well yet, it wasn’t in a frustrating — I want to smack their heads together — sorta way. In fact, I have to admit that I fell hard for both Matt and Lucas almost as soon as they were first introduced to me.

Sexy times between these men, you ask? Scorching is the first word that springs to mind, but it is closely followed by tender, sweet, and heartwarming. As Matt and Lucas’s ‘relationship’ changes from purely business to something more, even if neither of them can figure out exactly what form that ‘more’ might take initially, so does the intimacy between them. In my mind this was a perfect example of the sex scenes enhancing the story and pushing it forward.

Of course life is never just plain sailing, and neither are relationships in romantic novels, so Matt and Lucas do walk into one or two roadblocks on their way towards each other. Lucas, the einzelgänger, has to come to terms with the fact that he does want and need a partner in his life after all, while Matt needs to figure out if and/or how his escorting is going to fit in with having Lucas in his life. The issues are real and while the solutions appear obvious, both men need to come to terms with the changes in their feelings and lives before everything falls into place.

While the relationship between Lucas and Matt definitely falls under the ‘May to December’ header, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that wasn’t a main thread in this story. The age difference is mentioned once or twice but at no point does it provide a roadblock as far as these two men are concerned. I do love it when a story does not follow a predictable path.

The secondary characters in this book were fabulous. I can’t honestly say that surprised me; K.C. Wells is in a league of her own when it comes to writing memorable side characters. In this case I would love to add both Angela (Matt’s sister) and Grandma Diane (Lucas’s grandmother) to my list of people I wouldn’t mind meeting in real life — provided they’d bring Matt and Lucas along. J

I don’t usually say anything about the cover of the books I read in my reviews. I’m not a very visual person and just don’t tend to pay a lot of attention to them. In this case though, even that is worth at least some gushing; not only are the men on this cover stunning and hot, they are also exactly how I imagined Lucas and Matt.

I guess I ended up producing a gush fest after all. Maybe that was unavoidable. To summarize it all: If you’re looking for a story that’s going to make you smile and laugh out loud, a tale where you’ll fall in love with both MCs, and a addictive feel good read, I highly recommend Silk. I do hope there’ll be more ‘A Material World’ books in the not too distant future.

The Counting Series by Kelly Jensen

Counting Fence Posts (Counting #1)

Pages: 61
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Blurb

There are over two hundred thousand fence posts between Syracuse and Boston. Henry Auttenberg likes numbers—it’s his job—but he isn’t going to count them all, even if the view outside the rental car is less confounding than the driver, his attractive but oh so obnoxious colleague, Marcus Winnamore. It’s Christmas Eve, and Henry would much rather be home with his family. When the blizzard that grounded their flight forces them off the road, however, he’s stuck with Marc until the storm passes—or a plow digs them out.

As the temperature outside plummets, the atmosphere inside the car slowly heats up. Henry learns the true reason for Marc’s chilly distance—he’s not exactly straight… maybe… and he’s been fantasizing about Henry’s mouth, among other things. Confession laid out, Marc is all for sharing body heat… and more. Henry isn’t interested in being an experiment, but as the night and cold deepen, he could be convinced to balance certain risk against uncertain reward.

Review

Counting Fence Posts is such a wonderful feel-good story. I basically read it with a smile on my face from start to finish.

The story is told from Henry’s point of view and boy does he go through a range of emotions, not to mention a shock or two. Henry has admired Marc ever since he started working for the company where Marc has a two year head start on him. He is in awe of Marc’s professionalism and the path his career so far has followed. But, more than that, he’s been attracted to Marc for almost as long. But with Marc being straight, Henry has made a point of keeping his attraction secret…or so he thinks.

Driving back together after a business meeting is a fraught affair long before the find themselves caught up in a blizzard and stranded at the side of a secondary road. Initially their conversation is a combination of stilted and almost adversarial. It’s only once they realise that they’re stranded and may be for some time that the atmosphere between them warms as the world both outside and inside the car gets ever colder.

When it turns out Marc might not be as straight as Henry (and even Marc) assumed, things heat up, be it initially against Henry’s better judgment. What follows are scenes which veer from sweet to hot and intense and back to adorable again. Kelly Jensen writes kissing scenes like few other authors I know. Phew, those men may have been cold, I was certainly heating up.

This is not a long story and takes place over two days, so don’t expect a happy ever after by the end of this novella. But, don’t despair, there’s more to come and I have utter faith that these two men will find their way to happiness. They’re too good together not to.

Blurb

At the end of my holiday novella, Counting Fence Posts, Henry invites Marc back to his parents’ place for Christmas. Actually, it’s less invitation, more assumption, but Marc doesn’t object. After two days of haunting the lobby of a crowded hotel outside Albany, they’re finally on their way back to Boston.

Review

When this story starts, Marc has a hard time explaining to himself why he agreed to spend Christmas with Henry and his family. Second thoughts and uncertainty are creeping in, except that he knows very well and his reason can be described in one word, or rather one name: Henry.

Henry has equal difficulty believing that he’s invited Marc to his parent’s house and that the man is actually there. Henry is a champion second guesser

We learn more about Marc in this story, not so much from what he says or does but rather from his reactions to seeing Henry’s family, celebrating Christmas with them. Self sufficient, ambitious and powerful Marcus, as Henry realises when they part at the end of the evening, is not so very different from him after all. He yearns for security, family, and somebody by his side, just as Henry does.

I swear, these two men are the best kissers ever. I could read about their mouths pressed together forever and not get bored. In fact, I could happily read more about Henry and Marc; they are a delight to read about. I love how we get to know them better little by little, just as they are discovering more about each other — slowly. And I thoroughly enjoy Kelly Jensen’s storytelling voice. This story and Counting Fence Posts are both flawlessly written and smoothly told. The balance between introspection, dialogue, funny and more serious was just about perfect.

I’m thoroughly enjoying these stories and I’m so very happy there’s more to come. Trust me, if you’re looking for stories that are going to leave you happy and with a smile on your face, reach for the Counting stories.

Counting Down (Counting #2) by Kelly Jensen

Blurb

It’s been a week since a Christmas Eve blizzard changed the course of Marcus Winnamore’s life. Plan A is now Plan B, and the first item on his new agenda is taking Henry Auttenberg on a date. They’ve been invited to a New Year’s Eve party, and Marc is counting down the hours until midnight… until he can kiss Henry in front of his colleagues and friends.

Things don’t quite work out to plan. Finding the elevator out of service, Marc and Henry check the stairs, only to choose the wrong door and become locked in the basement. Close quarters once again make for close conversation, and as they explore every avenue of escape, they also explore the deepening attraction between them. For Marc, this isn’t an experiment. Will he still feel that way when he has to admit to someone other than Henry that he’s gay?

Review

Oh my, these two men make me smile. They sure have a special talent for ending up in impossible situations. In Counting Fence Post they managed to get stuck in a car during a blizzard and in this book they find themselves locked into a basement while they should be at a party, several floors higher, awaiting the New Year.

Of course they’re predicament leads to quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, but these stories are a lot more than a comedy of errors. In between funny escape attempts and mostly friendly banter these moments of ‘captivity’ also provide Marc and Henry with the opportunity to get to know each other better and discover what each of them wants. Because, while the circumstances of their times together it may make it feel as if they have been together for quite some time, only about a week has passed since the blizzard episode. Marc is still trying to figure out what it means to be gay and how to deal with that fact in the world at large, while Henry can’t quite shake the feeling that he may be ‘just’ an experiment for Marc. Both of them need reassuring and supporting and the wonderful thing about these stories is that both Marc and Henry are able and eager to provide that for the other, no matter how deep their own concerns.

I love how the author managed to tackle these issues without ever giving the stories a heavy or angsty feel. Of course, the kissing and sexy times (not to mention getting caught in an act) do a lot to ensure that the story doesn’t get lost in too much soul searching.

Reading these three stories has been an absolute delight and I’m so very happy I won’t have to wait much longer before I get to spend time with Marc and Henry again. I have it on good authority that there’s another short story as well as another novella to come in the not too distant future and I can’t wait to get my hands on those. Marc and Henry have captured my imagination and to say I’m now well and truly invested in their journey and relationship would be a gross understatement.
