It might only require going home to settle his grandmother’s estate, but he plans to use his time away to figure out how to temper his feelings for Jude and bury his jealousy once and for all. But when Jude joins him on his trip, Hudson falls even deeper in love, especially after Jude stands by his side when he finally confronts his mother for rejecting him.

However, it’s not all hearts and flowers while they travel. They’re over two thousand miles from home when Hudson learns a ruthless corporate farm threatens the commune they both love. In order to save their way of life, Hudson must ask his mother for help. Excerpt:

Jude shifted in his seat and stared at Hudson. Hudson couldn’t take his eyes off the road, but the desire to turn toward Jude and mirror him was overwhelming. “What was your first impression of me when I met you at the farmers market?”
“Should I be diplomatic or honest?”
“Honest.”
Hudson ran that day over in his mind. It was crystal clear, still, even though it had been more than nine months ago. Jude had meandered from stand to stand. He initially stood out from the crowd because of what he was wearing: a bright blue, almost turquoise wool coat over a black turtleneck and tight black jeans. In the blur of quilted plaid flannel and fleece hoodies in various shades of drab, olive, and Carhartt, Jude was all Hudson could see.
“I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. You were… stunning.” He shook his head. “I don’t know another word for it. I was talking to some customer about how we raised our chickens, and when I saw you, I stopped midsentence. I stared, felt like a dirty old man because you looked so young, and when I turned back to the woman to carry on our conversation, I had no idea what we’d been talking about. Literally none. It was like looking at you sucked the words out of my throat and the thoughts right out of my head.”
Jude chuckled. “Seriously? Was it the coat?”
“It made you stand out, but no, it wasn’t the coat. It was everything about you. Your broad shoulders and your hair and your eyes and your fucking lips.”
“You like my lips?” Jude pulled his rose-flavored lip stuff out of his front pocket and made a show of smearing it across the bottom one. Then he rubbed his lips together and licked them, all while staring at Hudson with soft bedroom eyes.
The bus vibrated, a jagged noise piercing Hudson’s ears as he drove too far to the right, edging his tires onto the rumble strip. “¡Coño!” He maneuvered back into the center of his lane.
Jude laughed. Hudson’s heart thundered against his rib cage.
“You’re evil,” Hudson said. “Evil, I tell you!”
“Maybe.” Jude bit at his bottom lip.
“Stop. Stop tempting me with your fucking gorgeous mouth. I can’t have you doing that shit while I’m driving.”
“Okay.” Jude smirked but kept his tongue and teeth from doing anything else. He put away those hazel sex-eyes too. “So, how did you see this trip going down?”
“Just like that?” Hudson was incredulous.
“What?”
“You can just turn it on and off like a switch?”
“With you, sure.”
“Well, I can’t.” Hudson gestured to his crotch, where his dick was obvious, thick, and quickly moving on its way to fully hard, even though Jude had stopped the licking and the biting.
“Want me to touch you?” Jude’s voice was breathy as he slid his warm palm up Hudson’s inner thigh. He thumbed over the head of Hudson’s cock, and Hudson got harder. Jude played with just the head, moving back and forth, his touch light and delicious.
“Want me to drive off the road?” Hudson managed not to sound choked off.
“No.” Jude pulled his hand away and smiled like the devil. “I want you to drive. And I want you to tell me about what you want to do on this trip besides the obvious. And for the record, turning it off doesn’t happen like a switch. Turning me on with one look, easy!”
“You’re dangerous.”
“Damn right I am.”

My Review:

When I read Farm Fresh (click on the title for my review), I fell for Jude and Hudson. I read their individual and combined struggle to overcome their issues and learn to trust each other and themselves enough to open up to each other and the attraction between, them with bated breath.

I’m so delighted that Picked Fresh continued their story. While Farm Fresh may have brought the two men together, they still have some way to travel before they recognise that the feelings they have for each other are mirror images. So how appropriate is it that most of the story in this book takes place while the two men are on a road trip; a journey that will force both of them to reconnect with a past that has left them hurt and bruised but may also provide them with closure and answers to questions they were too afraid to ask.

We get to know both Jude and Hudson a lot better in this book. In fact, Picked Fresh could be seen as the book we usually don’t get to read; the story of what happens after two characters reach their happy for now. Since I’d fallen hard for these two characters in the first book, I was only too delighted to reconnect with them and join them on their journey closer to each other. I loved that Posy Roberts gave both Jude and Hudson the opportunity to face their past, find closure as well as new ways forward without making it feel too good to be true. And I’m especially glad that she did this without making the story overly angsty. I could say a lot more about that, but that would mean spoilers, so I’ll leave it at this: you really want to read it—trust me.

Jude and Hudson are so very beautiful together. Even while neither of them is completely honest with the other about the depth of their feelings and what they really want from the relationship between them, they’re there for each other when it matters; putting their own issues aside if it means an opportunity to help the other. And, since this is a sex positive series, their bodies often do the talking when words fail them.

The sex and intimacy between these two men is hot as well as selfless and glorious. From Hudson making himself totally vulnerable to Jude pushing himself a long way out of his comfort zone to give Hudson what he needs, their interactions were breathtakingly beautiful.

Posy Roberts’ writing is wonderful. Her sentences flow with ease and the story almost reads itself. I’m so glad I started the book on a day I had lots of time to read because I don’t think I would have been able to put it down even if something important had demanded my attention. From Jude and Hudson finding themselves and then each other to both men working to save the commune, I had to keep on reading until I was sure all would be right in their universe.

With Hudson and Jude resolving most, if not all, of their issues in this book I wonder whether or not it is time for Charlie and Leo’s story now. While we get little more than glimpses of their relationship and issues in the first two books, it is obvious there’s a lot more to them and I can’t help feeling they have a journey ahead of them at least as intriguing and touching as Hudson and Jude’s has been. I have to admit though that regardless of who will end up being the main players in the next Naked Organics book, I will devour it as soon as it becomes available. With this series, Posy Roberts has created an intriguing world and inhabited it with fascinating and endearing characters. It is safe to say I am well and truly hooked.

The Runaway Gypsy Boy by Brina Brady: Promo and Review Tour with Giveaway

It is my pleasure to welcome Brina Brady and her latest release, The Runaway Gypsy Boy, to my blog today. Sit back and enjoy the excerpt and my review and don’t forget to enter the giveaway.

Author: Brina Brady

Release Date: June 15

Length: 93,000 words

Price: $3.99

Blurb:

Twenty-year-old Daniel Serban loses his dancing job and threats of being outed to his family forces him to flee Limerick, Ireland. Daniel fears his father and the other gypsy men will force him to marry his betrothed, or bring bodily harm to him for being gay.

As chance would have it, he ends up in Cleary’s Pub, a gay leather bar in Galway where he meets the grouchy, ginger-bear Ronan O’Riley. Little did Daniel know meeting the ginger Dom would change his life style as he knew it.

Ronan O’Riley has been unable to move on to another sub since the death of his sub a year ago, that is until a troubled gypsy boy steps into Cleary’s. Ronan’s lonely life is about to change.

Can Ronan convince Daniel to trust him or will Daniel’s fears of his past ruin any chance of a relationship? Unexpected heated attraction in the barn ignites their relationship to move forward. Though, the two men have many of the same dreams, Daniel’s secrets and Ronan’s need to gain Daniel’s trust outlines some of the many challenges they face.

Excerpt:

Daniel peeled off his jeans and T-shirt, then he wiggled into his scanty red G-string for the evening’s show at the Sugar Boys Club. He re-braided his hair so it wouldn’t get tangled while he twisted around on the pole, weaving a red leather strip into one strand. He threw his brush into his backpack. He was glad he’d gotten there early enough to shower off the paint from his day job.
“The boss wants you in his office.” Liam poked his head into their shared dressing room to deliver the unwelcome news. “Now.”
“Now? I have to go on the pole in ten minutes.” Daniel’s stomach twisted in knots, not wanting to be late for his dancing gig, he also didn’t want to talk to the boss, this was never a good thing for any of the dancers.
Liam shrugged in sympathy. “Don’t want to keep Bailey waiting. You know that as much as I do.”
Daniel slipped back into his jeans and pulled his neon green T-shirt over his head. He walked down the hall to Mr. Bailey’s office. The door was open, so he stepped into the office. The fat, gray-haired man sat behind his oak desk with a pipe hanging from his mouth. No one ever wanted to get on the boss’s wrong side. The man had a heavy peasant’s body, sturdy and hard, bursting with juice. He’d been known for taking sexual liberties with his dancers. On his desk sat a large bowl of pastel colored sugar cubes for the boys. The boss expected the boys to eat one cube when they entered his office. All the dancers believed the green ones were laced with drugs. Daniel certainly wouldn’t put it past Bailey to drug his employees.
“Did you want to see me, Sir?” Daniel stood just inside the door, almost gagging from the sweet, fruit-scented smoke from his pipe. The cheap bastard probably smoked some cherry tobacco, the most inexpensive kind available for purchase.
“Close the damn door behind you, boy.” Mr. Bailey propped his legs up on his desk.
Daniel closed the door, unable to move any closer, and leaned against it for moral support.
“Sit.” Mr. Bailey curled his lips in open distaste and pointed to the chair.
Daniel seated himself bolt upright on the straight-backed chair as ordered, immediately reaching for a blue sugar cube and jamming it in his mouth. His head throbbed from the uncertainty of the unexpected meeting. Either that or he had tied his hair too tight. He hadn’t done anything wrong as far as he could tell. He always arrived on time or early for work, never had any problems with the other dancers or the men in the audience. He obeyed all the rules to the letter and had never taken advantage of his employer, co-workers, or any of the clients.
“Did I do something wrong, Sir?” Daniel played with his long braid.

Review:

Wow! This is one fast and furious book in every possible way. The story in The Runaway Gypsy Boy starts off with tension and action and doesn’t let up until you’ve read every single one of the 93.000 words. This is one of those ‘take a deep breath and hang on to your seat’ sorta books, in which the story jumps from one tension and/or action filled moment to the next without allowing either the characters or the reader a moment to catch their breath. Because when it isn’t the problems connected to forging a new relationship causing ripples, it is either the danger stemming from Daniel’s background rushing you along, or the hot sex making you gasp.

To be perfectly honest, for me that was both a good and a not so good thing. While I love a story that grips me and pulls me along, I do also enjoy one or two quieter moments just to catch my breath and reflect on what I’m reading. I didn’t get many opportunities to relax in this book. The moment one problem appeared to have been resolved, the next one popped up and I’d find myself at the top of that rollercoaster again, holding my breath while anticipating what might be coming next.

I liked both Daniel and Ronan. It was hard not to feel sorry for Daniel who finds himself having to run away before he is fully prepared to leave, just as Ronan tugged at my heartstrings because of the love he’d lost a year earlier and the pain that still causes him. Just like everything else in this story, the attraction and connection between Daniel and Ronan is instant and, uncompromising and full-on, although not without its issues. With Ronan being an experienced Dom and Daniel only barely aware of what BDSM is, both men have a steep learning curve ahead of them and the path is by no means without its pitfalls. Add to that the danger posed by Daniel’s family, and you find yourself caught up in a breathtaking tale.

Of course, for me personally, this story had the added bonus of being set in Ireland, the country I’ve called home for the past nineteen years.

If you enjoy your stories fast paced, danger filled and hot, there is a very good chance you’ll thoroughly enjoy Brina Brady’s latest release. J

No Man's Land by Theo Fenraven

No Man’s Land by Theo Fenraven

Pages: 170
Date: July 18, 2016
Details: ARC received from author
E-book

The blurb:

Amateur ghost hunters Cy and Zelda are invited to the BWCA in Northern Minnesota to investigate an alleged haunting at Brighton Lake Lodge. Mac, the owner, has returned home from London with plans to restart the family business, but the ghosts have to be dealt with first.

Interesting things happen the moment they arrive; it seems there isn’t one ghost, but many. One of them uses Zelda’s robot, Orwell, to communicate with them, and they find out the ghosts aren’t ghosts at all.

Set in a time in the not-so-distant future, the story destroys ideas of what is real, what isn’t, and the lengths people will go to in order to survive.

My review:

It is funny how I find myself obsessively following authors for what appear to be conflicting reasons. There are some whose books or series I keep on returning to because I know exactly what to expect and I need that comfort of familiarity. J.D. Robb is one such author for me.

And then there are authors like Theo Fenraven, who I search out because I never know what he’ll present me with next. No book is exactly like any of the previous releases. He hops from genre to genre with an apparent ease that leaves me both awed and somewhat jealous. Opening a new book by this author is always an adventure because I won’t know what I’m dealing with until I’m well into the story, by which stage the characters and the storyline will invariably have captured me.

In No Man’s Land, the author takes this trait of his one step further than he has done in the past. What I thought I was reading when the book started turned out not to be what this story was really about. I apologise for being vague, but discovering where this story was going was such a riveting and delightful surprise for me I don’t want to spoil that experience for anybody else.

What can I say about the story? Well, it is fascinating and gripping right from the start. It features characters who will intrigue you, and not all of them are exactly human J. And it brings us a tension-filled tale filled with both mystery and questions to ponder. In fact, while I loved this story and the way it was written at least as much as I’ve adored any of Theo Fenraven’s previous books, it was all the ‘what-if’s’ and ‘what-would-I-do’s’ it left me with that really hooked me.

Because that’s the thing with this author’s books; while they invariable give me a good and riveting story, they also force me to think about bigger and very topical issues. Not that you need to reflect on the story-line and what it means in order to enjoy this story. It can, very successfully, be read as a thrilling speculative tale. But if you enjoy lingering and reflecting on what you’ve read after you’ve finished a book—as I do—this book will leave you fulfilled on both counts.

Do yourself a huge favour and read No Man’s Land. Not only will you treat yourself to a fantastic story, which while not a romance does feature at least one love story, you will also find yourself pondering about the choices we make. And that’s before I even go into Theo Fenraven’s mastery of the English language, his carefully constructed sentences which paint detailed pictures without ever using a superfluous word.

Enjoy! I know I did.

Collateral Damage by J.T. Cheyanne Blog Tour

I’m delighted to welcome J.T. Cheyanne and her new release Collateral Damage to The Way She Reads today. Below you will find everything you want to know about the book as well as an enticing excerpt, but we’ll start with a guest post about baby showers which asks a very good question.

To Pink or not to Pink

Okay folks, I have a question, or ten....and an opinion. Snorts, those that know me well know I have strong opinions so I’ll ask the question and reserve the opinion until the end.
Recently, I was invited to a baby shower. A traditional baby shower. My question is, what the Hell is a traditional baby shower?

Here is what I was told. Women only. That made it a traditional baby shower. What? How? And by whose definition?

The father of the baby was told he WAS NOT invited to the shower. He wasn’t asked not to come, he was told point blank he could NOT attend. Now this irritated me to say the least, but before the opinion, let’s have a little history.

The “hostesses” of the party asked the expectant mother for a guest list which she provided. The list contained the expectant daddy’s name and the names of his entire men’s softball team. Cue the drama. Hostess One, the aunt, had a conniption fit. Yes, that’s a Southern thing, much worse than the vapors. She devolved from Southern manners down to manipulative Bitch from Hell.

Did you know that if men attend a baby shower, you can no longer decorate with the color pink even if the incubating babe is a girl? Gone were the pink table cloths and the pink plastic pretties and ribbons. But, don’t take time to mourn because there’s more! Did you also know that men cannot be in the same room with an elaborate three tiered cake decked out with fondant and frosting. It boggles the mind to even comprehend it. So, a plain sheet cake will have to suffice. Oh the freaking horror!

Now, all of this might have made sense...and since this is written you can’t see the eye rolling or hear the severe sarcasm but work with me here...EXCEPT... where do you hold a traditional baby shower? At home? In a church?

Oh no! These lovely hostesses rented a room at the local...gym. Oh yes! To get to the lovely cement block room, painted white but still a barren cement block room, the immaculately put together guests would have to walk past a basketball gym, a work out room full of barbells and weight equipment, and *GASP*...sweaty men to get to their lovely pink decorations and pink tablecloths.

Now Hostess Number Two was quite put out with the men being on the list and having the father there. When the blatant manipulation didn’t work, i.e. taking away the pink decorations and the elaborate cake, she contacted expectant Grandma to talk some sense into Baby Mama and make her see reason. Apparently, women cannot talk freely about “intimate subjects” when men are present. The entire debacle upset the Baby Mama to the point of copious tears. Not the expected outcome when one contemplates a baby shower.

Expectant Grandma called me about the situation. I told her quite bluntly I would not be attending the event because the hostesses were mental. We live in the 21st century. Fathers are more involved in the babies lives than they used to be. If the expectant mommy wants the expectant daddy there and he wants to attend, it’s not the hostesses’ call to make. They asked for a list. Honor the mother’s wishes.

The hostesses stated the mother was the focus of the party and all of the attention should be focused on her. Dear pretentious crazy ladies, the focus is on the baby, thus the term BABY shower. Yes, it used to be that only the mommy attended back when you were dinosaurs bearing young. That’s not the case anymore. Besides, mommy didn’t make that baby by herself. If Daddy wants to come, next time, you let him. After all, he already did at least once and that my dear old bats is WHY you are having the shower.

Excerpt

Spray painted names decorated the walls, but none of the gang type graffiti he was used to seeing back home. Footprints tracked the dusty floor. Most of them overlapped heading for the short hallway. A few stray ones meandered off to either side indicating three, possibly four different shoe types.
“Careful where you walk, we don’t want to disturb the unmarred prints,” he said, indicating the intact ones to the left and right. Will huffed in annoyance. “Right, you already knew that. I’ll stop sticking my shoe in my mouth; it tastes like shit.” Will laughed and clapped a friendly hand on Trevor’s back.
“When you’re being an ass, believe me I’ll let ya know. Let’s just get this done so we can get back to the air conditioning,” Will said.
“Gotcha,” Trevor answered and realized as he moved toward the hall, he’d made his first new friend in Rolling Fork. Well except for Logan, and he wasn’t sure if friend was the right word for the man. Fuck buddy? Certainly not a lover; that implied too much intimacy. Trevor hastily shoved his thoughts aside when his cock took notice. He cleared his throat. “How did we catch this?”
“Couple of kids hunting a make out spot came in this morning, maybe an hour ago. While the boy was laying out a blanket and pillows, girlfriend went investigating. When she went to screaming, he thought she’d found a rat or spider. He called 9-1-1 when he finally got her to shut up and moved her outside,” the deputy answered from behind them.
“And, you got their names and statements, right?” Trevor left the question hanging and looked over at the younger man.
“Yes, names and statements. Contact information too, though Krissy wasn’t keen on daddy knowing she was out with Beau. She was supposed to be at Laney’s with her best friend.” Mike answered.
Trevor took several photographs of the hall and then walked carefully down the middle. In a room to the right, Trevor spied the abandoned love nest. The blanket lay stretched across a cleared expanse of bare wooden floor. The pillows lay scattered where the boy had dropped them. A few snaps, including several of the wide array of footprints and he moved deeper into the structure.
A postage stamp bathroom with peeling tile opened on the left. Mold and God only knew what else grew in the bathtub. The toilet had been completely smashed and the sink hung drunkenly from the wall.
At the last door, he found the corpse. He paused in the doorway and winced. Flies buzzed around the bloated body. The smell stole his breath for several seconds. Behind him, Mike again struggled to keep his breakfast down, but he didn’t bolt that time. Will waited for Trevor to survey the scene.
Male, mid to late thirties, dark brown hair, possibly well built beneath the distended, gaseous flesh. Maybe six foot, sprawled on his stomach and naked. Trevor lifted the camera and took a few dozen shots before moving into the room.
“No blood.” Will murmured as he came around Trevor’s left shoulder. “Interesting.” The man circled the body mumbling quietly, but was careful to avoid any clear footprints.
Trevor did his own look-see. The medical examiner was right. No blood marred the scene, but that wouldn’t have been the case if left for another day. The skin was dangerously close to rupture. Breathing through his mouth, Trevor took more pictures and then donned gloves to start the collection of evidence. Will Davis went to his knees beside the body.
Trevor found jeans, a Polo pullover, underwear and socks folded and stacked neatly by the door. He assumed, they belonged to the vic. Wallet, including seventy-five dollars in cash, and cell phone were both tucked neatly into the back pockets of the jeans.
The front pockets disgorged loose change and keys. With his finds, Trevor easily ruled out robbery as a motive. The young deputy bagged each item separately as Trevor handed them to him. Before the wallet was sealed, Trevor checked the I.D.
“Joseph S. Rutledge.” He read aloud.
“Scottie?” From the doorway, Deputy Vann spoke up. Trevor glanced up at him. The kid held the evidence bags against his chest like a shield. Disbelief wreathed his youthful features.
“You know him?” Trevor asked.
“Yeah, he went to school with my cousin, David. He owns the flower shop down on Main. Who the hell would want to kill him?”
“That’s what we have to find out,” Trevor said and rose to his full height. “He have any arguments with anyone in town? Unhappy customers? Old girlfriends?” Trevor paced away from the body and bent to pick up a flash of silver in the corner. Some type of coin, he bagged it and carried to Vann.
“Nah, he’s a homo,” Vann blurted and turned scarlet. His fair complexion lit him up like a Christmas tree. Trevor bristled at the slur.
“He was a man who didn’t deserve to die,” Trevor bit out. “It’s clear he wasn’t here alone.”
